It doesn't take much to remind me of a Winston Churchill quotation. This time, it is Churchill's comment on Germany's military incursion into the demilitarized Rhineland, which began on a Saturday in 1936, when most British MPs were away in the countryside: "The British ruling class takes its weekends in the country; Hitler takes his countries in the weekends."

Too bad Mooch wasnt canned on a Friday to try and bury it on Friday news dump.

Kelly is the only sane one in the WH at that day-to-day level imo. Glad he won out and not greased slick-back hair #2.

I posted this elsewhere, but I do have to agree the personnel thing here is a shitshow. Compounded by Dem obstructionism at all levels to fill spots. What an enormous fing clown show by both parties. That is, if you think clown shows involve 'whipping it out to see who has the bigger one politically' for all matters.

Im getting to the point to think that they should nuke the DNC building, nuke the RNC building, and just rebuild everything from scratch.

And as I stated there as well, the choice as it stood for me in November was: 1) death by clown shitshow; 2) death by unrepentant evil witch shitshow (going so far as to either intentionally or recklessly endanger classified information in pursuit of a paranoid way to cover up her communications); or 3) wasting a vote on the NM doobie man.

And we as a people got clown shitshow as a result....

Awesome choice America had this go around.....

Are the Dems doing anything at the moment to delay nominees from being confirmed other than the cloture business I read about recently?

It's easy to try and blame Dems for all the vacancies (unless you're not trying to do that), but the Trump admin has been very slow to either nominate people to confirm-able posts or to appoint them to posts that don't need confirmation.

Off topic, but i heard a fantastic podcast not long ago about Chuchill's relationship with one Frederick Lindemann and how it was potentially responsible for the 1943 India famine. It's about 40 minutes long, but fascinating.

There's also the fact that the Senate has been doing other things recently . . . When, exactly, were they supposed to vote on nominees when they were spending weeks on end on healthcare?

The "cloture" thingy is very effective in grinding things down to a standstill.

Trump was slow off the ball, no doubt. The cloture thingy has effectively ground the process to a near halt.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/17/us/po...inees.html

But, don't mind the notoriously conservative NY Times for calling that procedure out.

Another arena where the Democrats have put the skids is the pace at which they are blue-carding judicial nominees.

Btw NewHeel, hate to tell you, the nomination / confirmation business actually does move forward on a track independent of the healthcare issue (or other normal legislation for that matter.) But thank you for that wonderfully obfuscative point.

I can sympathize with the frustration with the parties, but absent reform re campaign finance, lobbying, gerrymandering, etc.,
how do we keep from eventually winding up in the same place after we nuke them?

RE: Trump Administration
Tick tock, tick tock.

What was it again with Nixon, the cover up and not the crime, right?

Trump dictated intentionally misleading statement about Jr's meeting with the Russian lawyer.

Quote: Flying home from Germany on July 8 aboard Air Force One, Trump personally dictated a statement in which Trump Jr. said that he and the Russian lawyer had “primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children” when they met in June 2016, according to multiple people with knowledge of the deliberations. The statement, issued to the New York Times as it prepared an article, emphasized that the subject of the meeting was “not a campaign issue at the time.”

The claims were later shown to be misleading.

Over the next three days, multiple accounts of the meeting were provided to the news media as public pressure mounted, with Trump Jr. ultimately acknowledging that he had accepted the meeting after receiving an email promising damaging information about Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to help his father’s campaign.

The extent of the president’s personal intervention in his son’s response, the details of which have not previously been reported, adds to a series of actions that Trump has taken that some advisers fear could place him and some members of his inner circle in legal jeopardy.

Interesting. "The Prof" (who was eventually made Lord Cherwell) was instrumental in helping Churchill understand and advocate for several technical initiatives (especially air defense) that played a big role in the war -- but he was also a bit of a charlatan and didn't play well in the sandbox. In that regard he was like some of Churchill's other cronies, such as Lord Beaverbrook and Brendan Bracken. For all their faults (which could be conspicuous), each was at one time a key part of WSC's support system -- and he took a lot of supporting. My understanding is that by 1943 or so, Lindemann's influence had considerably lessened, and I hadn't heard about him in connection with the Bengal famine. But I will check it out.

RE: Trump Administration
NPR getting in on breaking news. There is a lawsuit being filed by the private investigator that was looking into the Seth Rich murder that claims that Fox News, a wealthy investor, and the White House worked together to push a false narrative about Rich's death being linked to the DNC leaks. Will be interesting to find out where the truth lies, but due to this President's affinity for trying to drive a media narrative, this really doesn't seem to out of reach.

Quote:Wheeler alleges Fox News and the Trump supporter intended to deflect public attention from growing concern about the administration's ties to the Russian government. His suit charges that a Fox News reporter created quotations out of thin air and attributed them to him to propel her story...

Fox's report went sideways shortly after it was posted online and aired on Fox & Friends. It was denounced by the Rich family, D.C. police, Democratic Party officials, and even, privately, by some journalists within the network. Within hours, Wheeler told other news outlets that Fox News had put words in his mouth...

A week later, on May 23, Fox retracted the story, saying the reporting process failed to live up to its standards. Hannity said he would take a break from talking about Rich's murder out of respect for the family...

On May 14, about 36 hours before Fox News' story appeared, Butowsky left a voicemail for Wheeler, saying, "We have the full, uh, attention of the White House on this. And tomorrow, let's close this deal, whatever we've got to do."

Butowsky also texted Wheeler: "Not to add any more pressure but the president just read the article. He wants the article out immediately. It's now all up to you."

I predict the Trump administration will soon have its sympathetic press teams alleging that moles from Obama's administration still in the White House are behind the rumor-mongering that led to the Mooch accusing Reince of being the leaker. It seems like a reasonable approach to saving face among many in his conspiracy-theorizing base.

(If it's not already happening, that is).

I predict we are going to see some major back breaking trying to explain away:

1) how the POTUS intentionally fed lies to his son/staff that explained what the meeting he and the Russian lawyer was about (and not coincidentally, this came after the G20 summit where, in Trump's own words, he and Putin talked about adoption)

2) how the entire lawsuit is a fabrication and the WH and Fox didn't conspire to put forth a fake narrative about Seth Rich that even some Parliamentarians fell for/brought up
