TIL you're not a real liberal. Restricting an individual's right to choose a mode of transportation??? That's not a liberal, that's an authoritarian speaking.

Should people get to have the choice to murder a person they don't like?

The government restricts the actions you're allowed to choose from, every day. No need to pretend otherwise.

So you equate murder with driving a gasoline or diesel powered car?

I've proven that the government can be in the right to restrict your choices, and you accept that every day.

My point was to kill off the false idea that the government is never correct to limit choices. I've done that

I suggest the Brits address the state of its dental care before deciding on other issues.

One of the roles of the govt is to protect finite public resources and to prevent a tragedy of the commons.

it's alarming how conservatives seem to literally enjoy polluting because they see that as their patriotic duty for some reason.

Nobody enjoys polluting. But when there is no viable alternative--and at this point electric cars are not a viable alternative--sometimes it's the best that can be done.

And forcing the population onto a non-viable alternative is not protecting the commons.

then what do you call those YouTube videos of people rigging their pickup trucks to go around emitting black smoke?

you really do a disservice to the industry to underestimate innovations of the USA. the govt mandated basically doubled the MPG standards by the end of the decade in the 1970s. hell kennedy set a goal of a man to the moon within a decade when our space program was struggling to beat the soviets. you really think it's unreasonable to see the electric car industry to have made massive strides by 2040?

Britain has totalitarian courts as well. I have a feeling the Brexit reaction will be mild compared to this one. London will be fine with it and the rest of the country will rise.

All sales of new petrol and diesel cars will cease in the UK by 2040, under plans to tackle air pollution.
But with electric cars currently accounting for less than 1% of new sales, the switch will mean seismic changes, and gives rise to a host of pressing questions.
Why are petrol and diesel cars being banned?
Poor air quality is the "biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK" - thought to be linked to about 40,000 premature deaths a year in the UK - the government says. While air pollution has been mostly falling in the UK, in many cities nitrogen oxides- which form part of the discharge from car exhausts - regularly breach safe levels .
Diesel vehicles produce the overwhelming majority of nitrogen oxide gases coming from roadside sources.
The government was ordered by the courts to produce new plans to tackle illegal levels of harmful pollutant nitrogen dioxide, a form of the nitrogen oxide pollutants emitted by vehicles.
Hybrid vehicles, which combine petrol and electric motors, will not be included in the sales ban.

with their footprint, climate, numbers, and timeframe planning........makes perfect sense from the former empire....

regardless, the planet will be just fine....

If and when it becomes a serious issue for the planet she will simply shake us off like a dog shedding water.

I think it's unreasonable to mandate that, whether or not such massive strides are made, we will be jumping whole hog to what is today an unproved technology.

Push the development of the technology hard, move to it when it is ready, but don't force it before.

I think it's reasonable to conclude if a few people make youtube video of their pickup trucks, you can confidently conclude all conservatives love polluting and believe it's their patriotic duty to do so. 01-wingedeagle

We're basically there now, with Tesla ranges well into 2xx miles, and it's 2017.

Pretty much zero chance that they won't be equivalent or better by 2040.
