Britain has totalitarian courts as well. I have a feeling the Brexit reaction will be mild compared to this one. London will be fine with it and the rest of the country will rise.

All sales of new petrol and diesel cars will cease in the UK by 2040, under plans to tackle air pollution.
But with electric cars currently accounting for less than 1% of new sales, the switch will mean seismic changes, and gives rise to a host of pressing questions.
Why are petrol and diesel cars being banned?
Poor air quality is the "biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK" - thought to be linked to about 40,000 premature deaths a year in the UK - the government says. While air pollution has been mostly falling in the UK, in many cities nitrogen oxides- which form part of the discharge from car exhausts - regularly breach safe levels .
Diesel vehicles produce the overwhelming majority of nitrogen oxide gases coming from roadside sources.
The government was ordered by the courts to produce new plans to tackle illegal levels of harmful pollutant nitrogen dioxide, a form of the nitrogen oxide pollutants emitted by vehicles.
Hybrid vehicles, which combine petrol and electric motors, will not be included in the sales ban.

with their footprint, climate, numbers, and timeframe planning........makes perfect sense from the former empire....

regardless, the planet will be just fine....

All the more reason to start ramping down investment in oil production companies.

The ICE will be gone from Britain by 2025 and the U.S. will follow suit.

Nothing wrong with long term planning as long as one doesn't put too much faith in the "long term" part. It's like looking at a companies 5 year financial projections. Maybe the first couple years numbers will be on point but usually year 5 is a fantasy.

I'm old enough to remember when they thought jet packs might be a real possibility in the consumer market in the 90s or early 2000s. There was an episode of That 70s Show where Red imagines the future in 10-20 years and he has a jetpack to commute to work.
