"much smaller budget" is inaccurate sky-is-falling language. The state-portion of our overall budget will be 10% less.

Of the positions cut or left unfilled during the upheaval, you have to hope that we we're smart enough to not refill the most useless 10-20% thereof. That would actually be a nice fat-trimming outcome of all of this (and maybe give the heave hoe to our new 185k diversity czar in the mix, notice that that bloated/unnecessary hire is never griped about in the press 03-wink )

I'm sorry, but schools with diversity officers making close to $200K (or more), such as NIU, UIC, and U of I, are already so well integrated with excellent minority and foreign student programs, and they have been for a long time. At the U of I, over 55% of grad students are from China. UIC also has a large Asian and Muslim student population. They also have a large African-American student population, with excellent academic and financial assistance programs (such as TRIO and CHANCE). Again, there are excellent programs and assistance at these schools. Having a diversity officer is, IMO, unnecessary and a waste of state funds.

Not sure why you wouldn't be proud to be a university that has an Office of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I can take a guess as to why you're not, but you should be.

I am proud of universities that are superbly integrated with outstanding programs and anti-discrimination policies and rules. I am not proud of spending money on an unnecessary position, especially during trying economic times.

Is there a link that tracks year to year enrollment? One article last year said lowest enrollment since 1982.
http://www.daily-chronicle.com/2016/09/0...t/aj9zyes/

DC states: Total enrollment was counted at 19,015 on the 10th day of classes this year, down 5.5 percent from fall 2015, according to data released by university officials.

Fall of 2016. Total undergraduate enrollment declined to 14,079, down 6.2 percent from 2015, according to data provided by NIU. Graduate school enrollment fell 3.7 percent to 4,672. Enrollment at the law school increased 4.3 percent to 264.

This is the seventh consecutive year that enrollment has declined at NIU, which had an enrollment of 25,313 in fall 2006 and once had a goal of reaching 30,000 enrollment by fall 2020.

At Illinois State University in Normal, enrollment increased 1.1 percent to 21,039.

So we are down 6000 students in 10 years. The average student pays around $500 for athletic fees. That is about 3 million dollars the athletic department is not getting to spend. Who knows what that figure is over the last ten years. So much for the Orange Bowl bounce.

ISU can figure out how to play the enrollment game but NIU fails miserably. Who would every believe that ISU has more students than NIU.

Bottom line is her duties whatever those are used to be handled by a committee of staff members, now we are burning 185,000/year on an unnecessary full-time position while roofs leak and important positions remain unfilled. Ridiculous.

Funding for higher education under the new budget will be 90% of what it was in 2015. Hopefully they put the extra funding towards the students and not try and restock the shelf with administrative staff. Would you prefer to spend on offering scholarships to prospective students or hire folks to ease the burden in the ticket office. Decisions a new President will have to make.

You guys are embarrassing yourselves. That you point out the one position that has to do with diversity and inclusion and the woman who runs it is black is not lost on me. Now, go ahead and tell me I'm wrong, i'm sure you have a great speech ready.

I for one am proud we have a highly qualified DOCTOR running a division of our university that should not only be celebrated on our campus, but should be part of every campus in America.

I'm sure the 185K is really holding NIU back...give me a break....
