Athlon ranks CUSA coaches, 2017
I'm surprised Wilson is that low. Would have expected him to be around 6. Would have expected Hopson to be around 9, but it hurt him to inherit a team picked to win the west and then not get it done. I don't disagree with 1-3.
1 - Skip Holtz, LaTech
2 - Rick Stockstill, MTSU
3 - Bobby Wilder, ODU
4 - Bill Clark, UAB
5 - Doc Holiday, Marshall
6 - Lane Kiffin, FAU
7 - Mike Sanford, WKU
8 - Butch Davis, FIU
9 - David Bailiff, Rice
10 - Seth Littrell, UNT
11 - Frank Wilson, UTSA
12 - Jay Hopson, USM
13 - Sean Kugler, UTEP
14 - Brad Lambert, UNCC

WIlder being 3rd seems a little high, he is going to have to show something for me to be ranked that high...Also Wilson at 11 seems pretty ridiculous just based off last season...Sanford is probably about right, might drop him ahead of Lane though....Bailiff would be last for me or close to it...

It's easy to forget that ODU only just started football 8 years ago. Homebody opinion but I think he's just fine at #3 for doing all that he's done in the amount of time he's done it in.

I looked at the list and its arbitrary at best. Like how can the head coach of Vanderbilt be ahead of the top 5 of the CUSA coaches on this list? That's just stupid.

The article is titled "Louisiana Tech's Skip Holtz ranks near the top of C-USA." But he's ranked #1..... cmon Steven!

The list is what it is, and I find no real reason to have a complaint. I do find it interesting though, that WKUFan518 thought that Bobby Wilder "being 3rd seems a little high" at No. 3 with Wilder coming off a 10-3 season and a 56.7% winning percentage for his three years in C-USA -- while owning an overall 69% winning record for his eight years as a head coach. This while he found Sanford "is probably about right" at No. 7, with no record to back it up as this is his first year as a head coach.
Just -- interesting.

It's a really good thing MTSU's coach is ranked higher than ODU's on this list, otherwise we'd get another 20 page thread arguing over a meaningless preseason list

No, we disagree (most of us) that Stockstill is so high on the list

10-3 season in which the teams you played that were good, destroyed you, Wilder has zero quality wins...Maybe that changes this season, but he still has a lot to prove...Sanford has at least experienced what happens at Boise St., Notre Dame, Stanford programs and winning big time games.....Even though not a head coach he has coached under some great coaches like Taggart, Harbaugh, Kelly....Not too shabby of a list....

I would say winning in such a short amount of time is pretty impressive, no matter who was on the schedule, no?
What is your definition of quality? I would say beating Southern Miss, UTSA, and Eastern Michigan (non bottom 40 teams) is somewhat quality. Beating LA Tech and Rice in the first year in CUSA should be considered quality. (both bowl teams at the very least)
I agree that as more time goes by, Wilder needs to have wins vs. better teams. But, just competing in FBS with all FCS recruits and then young FBS recruits is pretty impressive.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't take another CUSA coach over Wilder. A lot of the schools have significant advantage (facilities, experience, etc) yet aren't at the level of ODU.

Actually I disagree with this list. Stockstill should be lower. He has padded his record over the years with garbage teams.

Ha not coached in 7 years and was average in an ACC with bad FSU and Miami teams. Wake Forest was one of the better ACC team those years.

I don't know, 518. It just seems to me that it is hard to rank a rookie head coach in a list of head coaches with multiple seasons behind them. I obviously have a lot of respect for BW. He started this ODU program from scratch, and has had success at each step along the way. He's brought a lot of joy to ODU football fans, and to me it seemed a little harsh to question a ranking (that to me) he earned and deserved at this point -- preseason 2017.
Hopefully for Western fans, you will have that same regard for Sanford in preseason 2020.

I don't know any MT fan that thinks Stockstill is that great a coach. A good and decent man, but as a coach, meh. I would put CRS no better than 8 or 9 in this conference.

Most of the time game experience matters....
I can count 3 or 4 games (each) Western lost under Willie and Brohm that most likely were wins after a coach gets a few years under his belt. Hope that's not the case this year but most likely there will be a game (or two) that comes down to coaching

Doc probably a little overrated but I guess Kiffin and Davis have to prove themselves with their new teams.
