At this point we can't be too picky. We need bodies. Agau is a great athlete that is still a very raw talent. This is the second time he has transferred, so I'm assuming playing time is going to be very important to him.

There should be an adequate amount of that available to him.

Playing time was first reason. This time he graduated and coach was fired. He would have played a ton for Georgetown to be honest. I dont think we offer him more playing time than what he would have had thisnyear but next year he should get a ton.

That's been our issue for too long.
We need to be more picky (and successful). Bodies aren't going to get us where we need to be.

Last year we needed bodies at the backup PG position and it didnt work out (fields, mauras, pinckney). I dont think we need bodies this year which is why you have seen them "shoot for the stars." There would have to be a significant player to crack playing time this year (outside of 5 mins a game at PG).

These are some strange comments since you mentioned Fields within them. To say that he "didn't work out" is simply not accurate. He was the back-up point guard as a true freshman ahead of the other guys that had college playing time at other schools. Had he not transferred to Radford he may have ended up as the starter depending on what is going on with Caver.
To say that this year you have "seen them shoot for the stars" (as opposed to last year) ... I think any player that wins Tidewater Player Of The Year, or any player that wins Virginia Player Of The Year, is considered a star player. Fields won both awards as well as 3 state championships. How many of these "stars" that they have recruited this season had a better resume than that?

He was an excellent HS player, no doubt. That doesn't always translate to college, and IMO I wasn't that impressed with him. Apparently, given the fact that he had few, if any, substantive college offers out of HS, neither were recruiters. I think he tried to play at a higher level than his skill, and it didn't work out for him or ODU.

Fields was going to be behind Caver regardless. He still may have turned out to be pretty good (he wasn't bad for a true freshman).
But with a healthy Caver, Fields PT was going to be limited.

I liked Fields. He was a bit limited due to his physical stature but I liked his game. Oh well. Hope Agau picks us, would be a good way to wrap up this class. Still need a couple big men in the next class though.

No disagreement with anything you have stated. Just pointing out that as far as "stars" coming out of high school goes (in responding to Giles), Fields was that. I'm pretty sure that if Fields had been the same size as Caver he would have gotten recruited at least as much as Caver was. In other words, his height held back the recruiting on him. Even so he came in and achieved the back-up point guard position in spite of having taller, and more experienced point guards on the roster that were brought in to compete for the back-up position. One thing is for sure though ... Radford has recruited him as of his departure from ODU. Who knows if anyone else made an offer.
No matter how good someone is in high school it doesn't always translate to them being at the same level once they begin playing in college.

No, that's what makes recruiting so exciting -- and terrifying -- especially at this level. You never really know.

AS I expect everybody on here already knows pretty much everyone that plays at the D-1 College level was a star on his HS team. The going gets a lot tougher at college when everybody else on your team and your opponents team were a star also. I really liked Fields as well and I always love the undersized guy proving the experts wrong. That said he was behind Caver and maybe someone else in the future. He could not make himself taller, not sure how much bigger but I would think he will play a lot more at Radford. That said, if he scores 30 a game and leads them to the Conference Championship I will regret his leaving a lot more than I think I do at the time. In any case good luck to him.

Im sorry but Fields is not a great player and wasnt even on scholarship. High school awards really dont mean much, i have 2 buddies; one was Southeast District player od the year over BJ Upton and the other won over David Wright. Neither played one inning in college.

Giles, you are moving the goal post on this one. The topic is related to recruiting from the high school level, not what did you do afterwards. According to you coach Jones has just now gone off in pursuit of 'stars'. I take it now that you must mean recruiting services 'stars' since you are attempting to down play any awards that high school players obtain. Guess what, those recruiting services often don't hit the mark either (Kent Bazemore for example).
"Fields is not a great player and wasn't even on scholarship." --- He was a great player in High School. Three state championship trophies with him running the point, Tidewater POY award, and State POY Award attest to that. In case you forgot, he was told that he would be getting a scholarship after his freshman year by coach Jones according to the VA Pilot. Peyton Pervier was on scholarship. Was he therefore a great player?
"High School awards really don't mean much." --- Unless and until you want them to. I could name you a lot of former Virginia High School player of the year winners, or other types of Virginia player of the year winners from high school that went on to have very substantial college careers. A few of them even ended up at ODU and at least one of them went on to the NBA (hint, Atlanta).
I'm pretty sure that a lot of people got votes for Southeastern District Player Of The Year ahead of BJ Upton. He graduated in 2002 from Greenbrier Christian Academy, a private school that has never been a member of the Southeastern District. Congrats to your buddy for winning the award in the Southeastern District though.
By the way, David Wright (Hickory High School) earned All-State honors in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and was named Virginia Player of the Year in 2001. He also won the Gatorade Virginia Player Of The Year in 2001. If your 'buddy' actually did win a district award over him then it is pretty obvious that the fix was in.

That's a pretty safe statement to make considering Fields is no longer on the team to ever prove you wrong. Next time you should also include illness and disciplinary actions as reasons that someone could start in place of another person though if you really want to cover yourself. Fields easily could have started at the 3rd place clinching game at UTEP last season. He played more minutes than Caver did in one of the biggest games of the year, and Caver wasn't injured (he was ill).

Fields is not a mid major point guard. I suspect he will have a decent career at Radford.
Fields isn't even in the same realm as Caver. Not even close

You are really confusing me. Recruiting rankings are significantly different than how many state titles one won in high school. If Fields resume was so great, why didn't he have scholarship offers out of high school? Why did he walk on at ODU? Face it, they needed bodies at PG and grabbed whoever they could grab. I think everyone knows what Bazemore was, a raw athletic talent that was molded into an NBA player.....what does that have to do with Fields?
You do realize that BJ played at Hickory until getting kicked out over grades and transferring to GCA, right?
Vadnais, a senior centerfielder, was selected by district coaches as the league's player of the year. Vadnais, who plans to attend Longwood in the fall, batted .561 this season with 11 doubles and seven home runs. He scored 32 runs and drove in 19 in just 66 at-bats. His on-base percentage was .630.
There you go; better numbers in 2000 than David Wright yet went to Longwood (for a few days). Why? Because the talent to compete at college is a heck of a lot different than the ability to compete on the high school level.

ODU basketball is dead. It's bland, boring, and headed nowhere. A twenty year season ticket holder, I gave up my tickets last year. Watching Jeff Jones brand of basketball is like watching paint dry-- except less exciting. Selig and Broderick may be great bureaucrats but they don't know how to bring excitement to anything. Flush.
Thats sad. I understand, but still... sad. I guess Im a lifer. I've made too many great memories, had too much fun and made too many great friends as a result of ODU hoops to ever give up on the Monarchs.
