Exclamation How much can we pay Mike Norvell?
This is what his current contract looks like, I believe...

Salary
2017-18: $1.9M (base + media + PR + capital campaign)

Bonuses
7 wins: $55k
8 wins: $90k
9+ wins:$120k
AAC COY: $20k
AAC Champ: $50k
Bowl Game: $25k
New Year 6 Bowl: $50k
CFP: $100k
National Champs: $300k

A good year (8 wins, regular bowl appearance, no conf. awards or championship) would net him a little over $2M.

A great year (9+ wins, COY, conf. championship, and a New Year 6 bowl) would net him $2.1M

My question...how much are we able to pay Mike if we wanted to keep him. I think he's a stud...I've said as much from the day we hired him & I heard him speak.

I know where we could have come up with about 2.09 million to throw toward an extension.............but I digress.

we used to pay the football coach a few hundred thousand while moving a Bulldozer around the South Campus to convince folks 'we're serious'...........but I digress.

We can pay him however much the ambassadors want to pay him. But B is right, once a P5 gig calls, he's gone and that's ok

I am pretty sure you missed my point because I have no idea what you are talking about.

Likely not enough to keep him long term...but he may be one loyal sob who appreciates making a truck load of money from a school that gave him his first head coaching job and whose fans love him with a serious passion.

I wouldn't necessarily say once "a" P5 gig calls, but once "the right" P5 gig calls. I don't know what "the right" gig for Coach Norvell would be, though. We all knew Fuente had a fairly short list (TCU, Va Tech, etc.), so once the Va Tech job became open and Fuente was being considered, I knew our time was short.

Couple of things to consider:
1 - with the talent on the current roster + what's coming in + what we're willing to pay (total package, including assistants, the new facilities, etc.), I really do think it will take the "right" job to lure Coach Norvell away - that right job might not open up for a few more years, and Coach seems pretty happy here, so what's the rush (in other words, I don't think he's necessarily going to run off to the first offer that comes his way - especially if it's a bottom rung P5 team).
2 - again to point #1 above, with the current roster, what's coming in, program improvements, etc., we're in a great place to attract our next football coach.
3 - enjoy the ride here and now and don't worry too much about the future! We've got a lot of good folks in the admin and big boosters that I trust to make the right decisions.

Go Tigers!

Along those lines . . . . .

"Alabama football coach Nick Saban will be paid $11.125 million this season under a three-year contract extension that includes a $4 million signing bonus approved Tuesday by the university board of trustees’ compensation committee."

Obviously if someone pays him $11M, he's gone lol.

But assuming we make all the other commitments (staff pool, facilities, etc.) I'm just curious how much we could put together for him if we wanted to keep him at a realistic number.

Could we do $3M per year?

$500,000 buyout to Memphis would be the equivalent cost of a P5 school pregame booster mixer.

We are who we are. Enjoy the ride while it's good. Then wait for next man up.

GTG!!!!

I tried to get him to sign a 5 year extension but all I had to offer was a cold mick light and next to last place ribs. Both were great but I have been told in the past I have low standards so there that.

Getting 4-5yrs from CMN (improving from last season YoY) would be great!! We would have established a winning brand of football, secured quality depth, established deep recruiting ties, and garnered lots of media attention. Two coaching staffs in a row that win and get promoted is a trend that can be resold! Loving the ride!!

NOT necessarily true....the grass isn't ALWAYS greener....Memphis is an AWESOME GIG....And Norvell could continue to WIN 8+ games per year bowl game every other year..Maybe NY6 bowl and a Be A TIGER for as long as he wants, without the hassle of ANY P5 expectations.....JMO I think building MEMPHIS as a DYNASTY makes Norvell look like Sabin to us!!!! I really feel Norvell is going to stick with us for awhile....it's REALLY a perfect fit for him..as he can get the recruits he needs to successfull and Have his name on buildings.....This is an area of the country that he loves as well Memphis feels like home to him....That's a factor that Fuente didn't embody
