I don't see Josh consistently beating Coach K, Roy, Boeheim, Pitino, etc. They finished 11th last year. They might get as high as sixth but only on exceptionally good years.

As for Tubby, he and his guys are working on a monster class for 2018. Not JUCOs but 4 and 5 star players. Memphis will be back to the big dance soon.

Maybe it's just me, or this stupid iPad, but your link goes to a story about GT and Pastner's first season. Not sure I understand how it is a bad characterization of us. Unless we have lofty expectations. I figured it was about our recent bout of bleeding transfers or something.

Did I miss some subtleties, or is my sarcasm detector out of calibration?

Edit - never mind. Went back and read instead of scanned it. I don't see that one sentence as very damning. But maybe I've just gotten numb after reading all the crap that gets tossed around on here...

There's no overtly damning sentence, and I can sympathize with being a bit numb, but there does seem to be an attempt to place the Tigers on the losing side of the new coach equation. Other recent articles have done the same thing, just took a different route. Makes me understand the "we'll show 'em" sentiment posts.

Those dang iPads sure can foul up the intended layout sometimes! Give the apple toys back to the kids, and get me a PC!

Pastner won 17 regular season games at GTech...that's not good enough for Memphis. we're not going to bow down and worship a coach who takes us on an NIT run.

that said, I'm glad he's happy at GaTech, I hope they keep him for many years and I wish him all the best.

I am remembering when the Grizz were mocked by the national media after they traded for Marc Gasol. Pastner wasn't getting it done. A change Had to be made.

I would have traded Pal for a box of twinkies. Getting Marc instead was incredible.

Not only did we pick up Marc, who was a second round draft pick, getting rid of Pau saved us close to $20M which allowed us to go out and pick up Z-Bo.

I make that deal 10 times out of 10.

Were you around when Calipari won the NIT championship at Memphis? The city went nuts.

It's all situational. We had experienced some awful years prior to that NIT win (same applies for GT). We were just happy to see SOME type of success (same goes for GT). And the excitement was more about optimism for what was next (I assume that applies for GT, too).

I just left some nice factual comments for the writer and some of the Georgia Tech respondents. I suggest all of you do the same.

RE: ESPN essay says desparate Memphis wrestles with implosion
Myron Medcalf wrote last year that Tubby was a home run hire.

This year he wrote a nice piece about the success Josh is having.

It's just a story. There's a little true and a bit of a favorable view on the facts.* This won't be the last nice piece about Josh, he's adored by the media.

Doesn't mean he will have success in three years. I hope for the best for him since I am a alumni of GT. But Tiger fans will have to let him go, he didn't do a great job here. As for his current performance at GT, he better land one of these big recruits late to salvage this class. A bunch of three stars isn't going to go far in the ACC, and you shouldn't have that many scholarships open this late.

* Take this gem.

- "He also hopes 6-foot-8 enigma Moses Wright, who failed to catch the eye of most high-major programs, will blossom into a contributor."

funny, I remember a LOT of Memphis fans being pissed at making the NIT and laughing at Cal for having a parade down Beale St...just like I remember a lot of Memphis fans wanting Cal gone after going 22-16 in 2005.

I guess folks block out the whole "for sale" signs in his yard thing...

I don't either, but how many of those names are still coaching five or ten years out?

Well, now that Cal is gone, he's not here to remind us about it every 15 minutes.

So you're saying Cal lowered our expectations initially?

Actually, I remember Cal trying to lower expectations by pumping up the NIT as a national tournament and winning it a national championship. I also remember not too many people bought it.

Why? None of what he says about Memphis is false. Shouldn't really care about what Pastner does unless you are a GT fan.

Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly. But, I recall plenty of interest and excitement over the NIT championship. Its wasn't really considered a major accomplishment, but it was more of a sign of optimism for what was to come.

I remember a lot of hand wringing and consternation over Cal's Beale St parade and claims of Memphis winning a 'national championship'

folks we're chanting 'Final Four' at D Wagner's Memphis Madness and we ended up with an NIT run...lots of folks were not pleased about that.
