It would have been a "dumb move" not to take it.
Just HOW have they been screwed? They had ZERO quality wins this year and lost to Kent. They really weren't that good over the last 1/3 of their schedule this season.
Dambrot scheduled in a manner to keep his string of 20 win seasons alive, not to build a resume for the tournament.
But he was the gold standard as far as MAC success and certainly had Hawk's number. I agree that this hurts the league, as Akron was/is the most successful program.
Every regular season CONFERENCE CHAMPION should be invited to the NCAA tournament, in addition to the conference tournament winner.
The NCAA Tournament should be a reward for a successful season, with conference games being most important.
If a team finished in the middle/bottom half of its league, it DID NOT have a successful season, regardless of how tough that conference is.
7th place P5 teams should NEVER get an NCAA bid over a regular season conference champ because they did not earn it.
Throw non-conference games out the window. They are window dressing, subjective, and meaningless. If you get lucky and beat UCLA, but finished 7th in your league, so what? Your season was NOT successful..."We're Number 7! We're Number 7!" WTF?!
Conference games are what matters most and that is where the priority should be. The NCAA tournament should reward regular season champions first and foremost.
The current system is a crass, cynical, shake-down by the P5 conferences and ESPN to get the "brand" teams on TV, not deserving champions.
