Akron's Dambrot to Duquesne...
...according to hoopdirt.com

Must've made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Weird. That's like a downgrade.

He's getting a $400k a year boost to $1m annually, going to a league that got three bids this year (as opposed to MAC's one), and Duquesne is doing a $40m upgrade to their arena.

How is that a "downgrade"?

He's got a big hill to climb. But being in a conference that regularly gets multiple bids to March Madness is a pretty big incentive.

Per the good Major, he's making an additional $400,000 and will be living in the Pittsburgh region which is v-e-r-y nice. Pittsburgh has become a fabulous city.

Would you rather make $400,000 less and live in Akron?

I understand where you are coming from - obscure mid-major to really obscure mid-major - but it is not a downgrade, particularly when you include some of Major's points.

Good for Dambrot. I respect how he has rebuilt his career after CMU. Dambrot/CMU is an example of how overly PC universities can be too quick to judge and castigate for stupid mis-statements. Imagine if CMU had let a heartfelt apology be enough...

LeBron's support didn't make Dambrot a millionaire or get him an At-Large bid to the Big Dance.

Plus he had to live in AKRON.

Former WMU assistant Cornell Mann, now at Oakland, is being talked about as candidate to replace Dambrot.

He played at Akron in mid-'90s.

That'd be a good hire. He's someone I'd hope we brought back if Hawkins left for some reason or another.

RE: Akron's Dambrot to Duquesne...
Dambrot has been super active in his first few hours at Duquesne. He's made offers to Brandon Wade (AA Skyline), Jack Ballantyne (Dakota, MI), and Duane Washington, Jr. (GR Christian). Western has offered Washington, too. Also, former Akron guard Tavian Dunn-Martin is now headed to Duquesne. Akron freshman Josh Williams announced recently that he's leaving Akron. I wonder if he'll end up with Dambrot at Duquesne.

Moving for a 60% increase in salary is hardly a dumb move. I'll take a real homer view on this. Good news for WMU and Hawk. Dambrot pretty much had our number.

60% pay increase + Multiple bid conference (Akron has been screwed the past 2 years) + more prestigious university + living in the Pittsburgh region > than staying in a status quo job where you have accomplished everything you can possibly accomplish, living in a town like Akron, Ohio.

It would have been a "dumb move" not to take it.

But also agree with Potro -- this is good for WMU

Dambrot's departure is a step backwards for the MAC. For WMU winning against lesser competition is not success.
WMU objective should be being the best in a strong conference. Not like MAC football which already has most of the bad NCAA teams.

Just HOW have they been screwed? They had ZERO quality wins this year and lost to Kent. They really weren't that good over the last 1/3 of their schedule this season.

Dambrot scheduled in a manner to keep his string of 20 win seasons alive, not to build a resume for the tournament.

But he was the gold standard as far as MAC success and certainly had Hawk's number. I agree that this hurts the league, as Akron was/is the most successful program.

Every regular season CONFERENCE CHAMPION should be invited to the NCAA tournament, in addition to the conference tournament winner.

The NCAA Tournament should be a reward for a successful season, with conference games being most important.

If a team finished in the middle/bottom half of its league, it DID NOT have a successful season, regardless of how tough that conference is.

7th place P5 teams should NEVER get an NCAA bid over a regular season conference champ because they did not earn it.

Throw non-conference games out the window. They are window dressing, subjective, and meaningless. If you get lucky and beat UCLA, but finished 7th in your league, so what? Your season was NOT successful..."We're Number 7! We're Number 7!" WTF?!

Conference games are what matters most and that is where the priority should be. The NCAA tournament should reward regular season champions first and foremost.

The current system is a crass, cynical, shake-down by the P5 conferences and ESPN to get the "brand" teams on TV, not deserving champions.

I agree. About the only constant since the book was written is Hawk still being at WMU.
