New World Map for Classrooms
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2...erent-maps
According to this article, there is a project designed to make a more accurate world map that will remove the inaccuracies of the old Mercator world map - which artificially inflates the size of land masses towards the poles (thus giving the West an overinflated sense of self worth...)
Quote:By contrast, the map known as the Peters projection, which city authorities are now meting out to many of the city's classrooms, is a relative fledgling. Introduced at a conference in Germany in 1974, historian Arno Peters' map aims to fix the Mercator's inaccuracies, which vastly exaggerate the size of land masses approaching the north and south poles — and in doing so, help prop up a decidedly eurocentric worldview.
But when you look at it - all it really does is overestimates the sizes of the land masses in the southern hemisphere up to the tropic of cancer, and then it decreases the size of the northern lands. What is supposed to be "more realistic" actually reveals an equally distorted map - and not even symmetrically distorted but blatantly attempting to make the lands towards the northern part of the world look small. Really, I guess it comes down to a white privilege guilt thing?
Too funny!

Maybe its someone overweight. They want Africa, South America, Canada and Russia to look skinny.
Mercurator predominately overstates Anarctica, Asian Russia, Greenland and Canada.

It makes the US look bigger than Canada, so it's just as innacurate.
I like the concept but, as you say, it looks like it was executed with a political agenda in mind.

Well, if anyone gathers self worth from a freaking map then they have other serious issues they need to work out.

Combining the worst features of both the Mercator and Robinson projections.

Peel an orange and try to flatten it out. You can't do it. You are going to get distortions no matter what Kyrie Irving says.

Now I know where the first seeds of my white privilege were planted: Mercator projection map on the wall, 1979, Phoenixville PA YWCA pre-school.
Please forgive me, citizens of the equator areas of the earth, for I have sinned...........

Seems like that kid could use some teaching.

Trivia question. Which of the two states has had the highest recorded temperature? What temperature?

What someone needs to come up with is an spherical LCD touch screen that has an interactive globe on it. That would be awesome.

I have no idea. Naturally, I would say Hawaii but since you brought it up I'm thinking you are going to say Alaska.
I'll guess Alaska 101 degrees.

It's actually a tie. Both 100F.

Interesting.
I have a friend that currently lives in Alaska and she explains to me that summers in Alaska and Texas are strangely similar.
She adds that many of the locals who have lived their all their lives have stated that this has not always been the case.
