Wichita State , Dayton , VCU being discussed for bball?

RE: Wichita State , Dayton , VCU being discussed for bball?
Question from a WSU fan: Can the league's university presidents override Aresco's decision to not add a school to the conference? Ultimately, to whom does Aresco answer? What body can terminate his position as commissioner?

Aresco has no real power in expansion. If the presidents want Wichita, they will be added. The commissioner works for the presidents---not the other way around. However, as a fromer TV executive, the presidents would likely give Aresco's opinion significant weight in making their decision.

With the exeception of maybe Jim Delaney (B1G) and maybe Greg Sankey (SEC-- although less likely than Delaney) conference commissioner's are merely administers who serve at the behest of the university presidents. If they say something, they are merely passing down what has been communicated to him by the presidents.

I think the AAC is trying to keep any future move as quite as they possibly can... The AAC however knows something has to be done to improve the basketball side and Wichita State can help lift some of those goals almost immediately if they're added.

When Tulane was added, it seemed like Aresco pursued them on the recommendation of Dr. Hitt at UCF.

Thanks for your answers. It's what I suspected, but nothing I've ever really thought about and a quick Google search didn't reveal anything concrete.

You do realize that it's probably NOT "Aresco" (as in Aresco personally and in a vacuum) that is "making a decision."
It's more likely that the media contracts and partners who are "calling the shots" on this one. If anyone is "blocking" Wichita State it's them.

I agree here. I see the traditional bb schools pushing to include Wichita State but it will be the tv partners call. Hopefully they want 3 to compete directly with the big east.

Wichita State would be a home run for you guys. Hope you add them and get some extra $$$ as well.
If you are able to take Dayton and VCU as well, then it becomes a grand slam. You would have a very strong basketball league, and deliver a devastating punch to the A-10.

Thanks for posting! There definitely seems to be a lot of smoke around Wichita and the AAC. Aresco would have shot it down (like he did about adding FB schools) if there wasn't.

Commissioners are always going to downplay expansion because they don't want to look like they are tampering with the livelihood of other conferences.
Well, unless you're the Big 12, but they're stupid.

I hope so. They have Baseball and Soccer too, which we could use more members in.

Where do you see that they have soccer? On their website I count 13 sports which is a little light.

RE: Wichita State , Dayton , VCU being discussed for bball?
WSU does not have soccer.
The Shox win the MVC All-Sports trophy about as often as we win in basketball.
Tennis, volleyball, and track are strong. Baseball has great facilities and a great history, but is down right now. Previous AD probably made a bad hire there.
Baseball should come back. We've got a stadium that seats 6,000 or so and casual (lawn chairs, BBQ, etc) seating on a hill past right field. Also have an indoor practice facility. The facilities are top notch.
Women's BB has been to a couple of NCAA tourneys recently, but the coach who did that has been relieved of duties (apparently "with cause") and we're in a transition period there.
Volleyball is an NCAA tourney regular lately Draws well, too. Average attendance last year was 2,300.
It would take $40 million to start up football. If it had to happen, that money could probably be found, but it's doubtful a startup program would have any value to a conference.
