RE: Spillane out?
Hey, he's leaving-deal with it.
All this hand wringing is rather silly. College Football programs replace players every year, it's the nature of the game. I'm FAR more concerned how we'll replace Terrell and Davis than I am about Spillane.
Buck up, buttercups. We've seen a lot of great football players graduate, move on and get replaced at WMU. It's a tribute to the maturity of the program.

Fleck showed us a whole season of incompetence before most people started to doubt. That season was a kick in the face, we were one 2 point conversion catch away from going 0-fer, we got shut out on homecoming by BUFFALO, and every few weeks there was another meme making fun of some stupid thing Fleck did. Most of us were on board even after the 1st MSU game with Fleck, the Nichols state game and the rest of that year was what caused people to doubt. We have to give Lester at least the first year, then if he stinks you have every right to question, just like we did.
I think you missed my point (and some past history here).
I'm not questioning Lester. Not at all.
I'm saying Major is a hypocrite based on past history.

RE: Spillane out?
I would think we have some LBers coming up who are physically-mentally capable.
We'll miss Spillane's experience and leadership the most.
But yes CFB teams have attrition every year, especially when there's a coaching change.

RE: Spillane out?
It almost seems fitting. Spillane made the great play on the QB at Northwestern that forced the fumble and effectively won WMU the game. That win started our amazing season. Then at the MAC championship game, Spillane's interception late in the 4th quarter with Ohio driving down the field sealed our victory yet again. That interception capped off a perfect season. He started and ended it all for us last year.
Now a new era begins, and it's time for someone else to take over the reigns.

RE: Spillane out?
As for the LB corps, losing Spillane hurts. He was a great player and a great leader.
Not all is lost though. We still return very good starters in Asantay Brown and Caleb Bailey. Alex Grace showed great promise in his limited playing time. I think Bailey moves back to the middle and Grace gets a starting spot outside. Drake Spears was also good in his ST capacity last year and will factor into the lineup this year. Then we brought in 6 LBs this recruiting cycle. Early enrollee Treshaun Hayward will add depth. Transfer Najee Clayton has to sit out a year I believe, but figures to be a starter in 2018. Guys like Dwayne Chapman could see immediate playing time, as we brought in some really good LBs this year.

5. He wants to leave football altogether and try baseball with Tebow.
Well thought out response which I agree with mostly. I think we need to remember that we return most of our defense and have a lot of talent waiting to hit the field.
The most concerning scenario would be a fundamental disagreement with the philosophy of defensive scheme. IF that is what it is and the new DC is moving in the wrong direction that could be catastrophic for this season and the future. We'll just have to wait and see.

and I'm saying it's a different scenario. Not getting on board until Fleck started to win makes a hell of a lot of sense considering he started off with so much losing and nothing in his past that would indicate he had the potential to start winning.

Made great defensive plays post script in the Cotton Bowl as well.

Unless you were here 4 years ago under a different name (which is entirely possible I suppose), then you don't have the full context.

RE: Spillane out?
Spillane has been one of my favorite players, mostly because I think he is a good leader, with a hard working and team attitude, in addition to being a tough player. He is one of the key players who I felt Lester needed to reach out to and utilize to keep the team focused and to maintain the chemistry and culture. It's a big loss for a lot of reasons, and does certainly suggest that all is not perfect with transitioning to the new coaches. And perhaps this is why we have been hearing crickets.
This is a kid who seemingly loved playing for WMU, and now is ditching before his Sr year. The most conspicuous reason for someone like him to do that would be that he is not relating well to the new staff, or that he does not believe in either what they are doing or how they are doing it. This may not be the case, but if we are left to speculate, which is where we are, it certainly doesn't leave a positive impression.
Some coaches get kids to want to play for them, some don't. I hope Lester falls into the former category.
***EDIT: want Lester to fall into FORMER category. messed that up.

RE: Spillane out?
By the way, what is with the turnover in our LB corps over the past few years? It seems like this program just cannot build depth at the position. Why is turnover so much worse in just this one position group?
