RE: Rhoades Recruiting
This link mentions the top unsigned players in illinois, including Tai Bibbs (Rice offer) and a Taylor Bruninga (Rice apparently watched him Friday, but he sparained his ankle in the 2nd quarter).

(02-05-2017 09:08 PM)elw4796 Wrote:  New offer to 2017 6-3 G David Collins. Out of Pennsylvania, offers from Cincinnati, Fordham, and USF among others. From his highlight tape looks pretty versatile. He's a bigger guard it seems (200 lbs), as opposed to a quicker one. Looks like he can shoot and finish inside, and looks aggressive on D.

David Collins hasn't been rated by most of the recruiting websites, but he does have a rating of 88 at 247sports and is their #219 ranked player overall in the 2017 class. This is just the 247sports rankings, not their composite rankings.

I wonder if Rice is interested in any of the top 25 Players in the Houston area in the Chronicle? It looks like they are not.

Those guys are a mix of 2017 and 2018 recruits. According to a combination of 247sports & VerbalCommits, Rice offered Savion Flagg (2017 - committed to TAMU), Jase Fabres (2017 - committed to UT), and Quentin Grimes (2018 - uncommitted) from that list. Not really sure where you got the impression that Rice wasn't interested in any of those guys. Most of them probably can't get into Rice, while the 2017 options chose P5 schools. Rice has offered other Houston-area players in the 2018 class, Miller Kopp (uncommitted). Rice also made offers to multiple Houston-area 2016 recruits (Carsen Edwards & Cameron McGusty).

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
No new recruiting news to speak of, but I thought I would mention the guys with current offers (according to Verbal Commits, supplemented by 247sports), as well as name some of the other schools that have offered each (with KenPom ranking for that school).

PG Tai Bibbs - Belmont (81), New Mexico St (101), Furman (105), Buffalo (119), Toledo (129) (many more)
SG Zhaire Smith - barely has a Verbal Commits profile, but 247sports shows him with offers from Kansas St (28), Texas Tech (37), Georgia Tech (76), Memphis (92)
SG Skyler Nash - Vermont (68), Albany (131), Siena (182) (handful of others)
SG Greg Elliott - Marquette (35), Michigan St (54), Valparaiso (97), George Mason (110), Temple (111) (handful of others)
SG Emmanuel Lambright - Verbal Commits doesn't show any other offers ... but 247sports and twitter say he had offers from Louisville (4) & Virginia Tech (46) back in 2014-15.
SG David Collins - Cincinnati (22), St Bonaventure (88), Buffalo (119), Toledo (129), Iona (130) (handful of others)
SG LePear Toles - Ohio (102), Akron (103), Kent St (167), Tennessee-Martin (207)
SF Caleb Simmons - Santa Clara (135), Portland St (233), N Colorado (284), N Arizona (328)

According to Verbal Commits, Rice just offered 2018 forward Kristian Sjolund, who is on the Chron's list. So Rice has offered 2 of the 7 2018 players on the list.

As far as I can tell (i.e. according to twitter and research) we're out on Lambright, Elliott, and Simmons.

Those are the 3 oldest offers that are still listed on Verbal Commits:
Bibbs - 2/1/17 (and someone from the staff watched him again last week)
Smith - 1/23/17
Nash - 1/30/17
Elliott - 4/25/16
Lambright - 5/15/16
Collins - 2/5/17 (someone from the staff watched him again on 2/12/17)
Toles - 10/17/16
Simmons - 9/12/15

In today's environment, is it harder to land a good player when you have only one spot available? I think that being part of a high impact class of players has a big appeal.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
A separate take on recruiting. 2 years ago when Chad Lott committed to Rice, someone (I can't remember who) noticed that he started following Coach Rhoades a few days (or weeks) before there was any suggestion online that he had a Rice offer (or committed to Rice). So I just glanced at Coach Rhoades' twitter followers to see if there were any interesting names. Recent followers (who are basketball players, I excluded non-players):

2017 players
Shaq Athie - 6'4" guard in 2nd year at Colby CC (juco). Perhaps notable that VCU had interest in him coming out of HS (but did not make an offer).
Skyler Nash - holds Rice offer
Mashaud Moore
Deven Hubbard

2018 players
Jonny Love
Chandler Owenby - according to twitter, made unofficial visit to Rice last weekend
Danta Stephens
Chase Ewing

2019 players
Jordan Turner, 6'7", saw tweet that back in October, Coach Rhoades saw both Jordan and (presumably?) his 6'4" brother and fellow 2019 player Jalyn

Deven Hubbard

This article says of Hubbard, "The Atlanta baller has just received an offer to play for Columbia University and is currently looking at attending Princeton. He also says he’ll be going pro this upcoming offseason."

Also that Hubbard was second in popularity only to an exotic dancer in the site's featured "Eye Candy" models.

He also has quite a few Facebook profiles. He shows no lack of self confidence.

PG Tai Bibbs and SG Skyler Nash are both Chicago guys. Also, Rice visited with PF Taylor Bruninga a few weeks ago and he lives in central Illinois. Not sure it is any of those guys, but those are the known current recruiting connections to the Chicago area. But it could also be a different 2017 guy or a 2018 recruit for all we know. Or maybe he just likes Chicago style pizza and it was worth the airfare to him?

did we sign anyone in the fall period?

Is it common for guys to go unsigned in fall?

Is this all about 2018's now, or are we tracking some uncommitted 2017;s?

No. Rice currently has no 2017 commits. It currently looks like Rice will have 1-2 spots available (Drone certainly graduating, rumors say Koulechov will leave).

(02-27-2017 11:56 AM)MemOwl Wrote:  Is it common for guys to go unsigned in fall?

I'm not sure how common it is, but it seems fairly common. There are a handful of top-100 players who are uncommitted, so it isn't just lesser prospects who go this route. In the 2015 class, Chad Lott and Amir Smith were spring signees. In the 2016 class, Robert Martin Jr, Austin Meyer, and Corey Douglas were all spring signees.

(02-27-2017 11:56 AM)MemOwl Wrote:  Is this all about 2018's now, or are we tracking some uncommitted 2017's?

Still tracking 2017 guys. As far as I can tell, the offers currently out to players who are also still considering Rice:
PG Tai Bibbs, 6'3" offered on 2/1/17, other offers from decent mid-majors
SG Skyler Nash, 6'5" offered on 1/30/17, other offers from mediocre mid-majors
SG David Collins, 6'3" offered on 2/5/17, offers from Cincinnati, Washington St, & decent mid-majors
SG LePear Toles, 6'6" offered on 10/17/16, offers from mediocre mid-majors
SG Zhaire Smith, 6'5" offered on 9/12/15, offers from Texas Tech, Kansas St, Georgia Tech, Memphis, and decent mid-majors

thanks. very helpful.

How does it work with 5 offers out for 1-2 spots? Is it first come first serve?
