Norvell Extension
Any word if they will extend the contract and provide a raise to Norvell? Need to think down the road as this season is shaping up to be a good one and suitors will come.

One expert predicted we would be the best team in the gang of 8 (best outside the power 5 schools). If that plays out, it could mean a New Year's Day bowl. Let's work on keeping Coach Norvell here for as long as possible.

He needs to be taken up towards the top of the AAC in coaches pay. Proven to be a good head coach, and one hell of a recruiter as proven by this years recruiting class.

Hope it is true but we need to learn to stop some offenses first.

Not so fast....don't get me wrong I love Norvell & think he has done a great job but let's see if he can build the program. We have one good season & one good recruiting year. And let's face it, if Norvell has P5 aspirations we can't pay him enough to keep him (see UH & Herman, Memphis & Fuente).

Agreed. I think the guy is great but it has only been one year. I recall over paying for a BB coach because the potential going forward looked to be great. A sample size of one year doesn't make much sense when trying to predict future results.

They could start and ease up on the APR provision that i have heard each coach has to attest to in some form-Fuente did NOT like it at all. In many cases, it's out of the coach's hands on what a kid does that screws up the program's RPI.

If the right job comes along all the money in the world won't keep him here.

Better be ready to pay or watch him walk. Not a matter of "if"... he will have suitors. He's a stud

The University is not making that mistake again. Calm down even if he gets an extension and raise does not mean that the new school that wants him will not pay his buyout. If they want him they will and I wish him all the good fortune in the world. He is a good coach and recruiter and we will find another one just like him or better.

Memphis is and always will be 1 bad hire away from football (and now basketball) oblivion.
One bad hire can undo years of good work.

Agreed; we had never made two bad hires in a row in basketball since possibly the 60s. That has kept us in Top 20 rankings over past 50 years per ESPN. Tubby is such key hire and he needs to turn around quick-those who say we can wait on 18-19 Memphis classes-well if that happens, the games could be moved to the Fieldhouse.

What does that mean? One bad hire doesn't put us into oblivion. We had a ton of bad football hires, and one good hire got us to the top of the G5 ranks.
Sure a bad hire undoes years, and kills momentum. Where is that not true?

True for everyone - even Bama could barely break above .500 (that's saying something) with both Mike DuBose and Mike Shula.
My point - it's simply not true/disingenuous to frame the statement as "Memphis is . . . " A better statement would be "Everyone is . . . "
There's no cloud of bad luck particularly hanging over our University and the football program. It was ignored for far too long, but those days are over. If & when Norvell moves on, we'll simply have to find another good (hopefully great) coach to fill his shoes. What makes me the most excited is that, whoever's coaching us in 2018, 2019, etc., will be inheriting a program in great shape with solid recruiting classes and a fan base with high expectations - that's a pretty good recipe for success.
