Don't slam ECU because ECU hired Jeff Lebo. It isn't working out. That happens.
That's not the issue. The issue is dragging it out 7 freaking seasons. It was obvious right after the fluke CIT tournament title. He peaked then and showed no reason for an extension, but got one that hamstrings us financially. He's lazy and uninspiring at his best. He would make a nice assistant for dadgum Roy.
I didn't give him an extension. The athletic director did.
Do you remember the sanctions after Herrion? Do you remember cleaning house, getting rid of the roster, for Ricky Stokes? Do you remember getting rid of the roster, again, for Lebo? ECU basketball started over from scratch 2 times in a very short time. I think Lebo's extension was to give the program some breathing room. Obviously, it didn't work as planned.
ECU finally has a home slate to get excited about... and Pirate basketball is mired in this cycle...
1.) Scheduling a bunch of nobodies OOC...
2.) Trying to lure third-rate transfers with limited eligibility...
3.) Beat some D2 teams early, and then lose most of their games, including to USF...
4.) Articles start appearing in the Carolina press about Votes of Confidence and reasons to keep Lebo on.
Like clockwork...
Its a sequence of events that doesn't look to be ending any time soon.
Next year will be Lebo's EIGHTH at ECU. His conference record at ECU is 40–72 (.357). If you count the creampuff 'RPI Vampires' he schedules to begin the year, his record at ECU is 110–114 (.491).
What other program in America, in a decent conference, allows those kinds of records to build? Particularly to a coach that will be going on year 20 with no NCAA appearances to show for it.
Damn... Take advantage of having quality brands coming to Minges to sell a coach and recruits on. Pirate basketball can actually be a money maker for the school, instead of a retirement plan for a corpse.
