I think the point doesn't remain. You are using a 700 year old example which isn't relevant considering how much science has improved since then.

RE: WV Public Schools Sued over Bible Classes
I always wanted a religions class in school, as an elective of course, covering the beliefs and history of each (Religions that have sway in the world at least). That said, evolution exists, whether you believe it on a micro level or a micro/macro level, you can't deny it because mutations and such, it absolutely should be taught, to what extent is the question.

It's settled science. No different than the Earth orbiting the sun.

Science is ever "evolving".

So the moon doesn't orbit the Earth?

What does that have to do the origins of humans?

The bible is historic, is there anything in print older? Are the Coptic texts available? The Bible is non denominational. Try reading it.

Historic as in these books existed or historic wrt the content being accurate? Former yes, latter NO.

my high school went in depth about various religions and their values. obviously this wasn't in science class though.

it just goes to show that you can't downplay evolution just because "it's a theory."

evolution at this point is indeed factual.

My school district in Wilmington NC had one of these privately sponsored bible courses in high school. It too was popular and it too I believe got shut down by the anti religion zealots. It ashame because it was a great opportunity for interested students to learn about what was in the bible in a historical context without having to go somewhere foreign. We also had a world religions course which I think is still available. I wish an Islamic course would have been offered

Damn, my HS cut the class like a couple years before I got there, one teacher left the posters up and that's what caught my interest. History and religion, probably my two favorite subjects.

Those atheists are sure scared of a God they claim doesn't exist. 07-coffee3

And people don't understand that the Constitution just prohibits the establishment of a state religion. The Founding Fathers intended for God (and Christianity) to be present.
The biggest misconception of the Constitution.

mine wasn't a specific class. just general social studies where they actually "went there" in teaching about hinduism and Islam.

What specifically was taught in this course? Was it truly a class that focused the cultures and history of the ME from 1000 BCE to 100 CE? Or was it a class that taught students how to better read scripture in order to become more devout in the faith?

My daughter had an elective class as a Senior that focused on world religions. The teacher in fact brought in members from several faiths as part of her classes to help explain their believe systems and culture. No proselytizing occurred in the class. It was basically a dumbed down college religion 101 class. I have no problem with this.

BTW...My daughter was really impressed with the Hindu lecturer that she brought in.

There was Old Testament survey and New Testament survey. We just went through the Bible and talked about what it said and what was going on at the time it was written. No evangelism at all. I know it's hard to believe but It is possible to teach history from some of the earliest writings in the world without pushing beliefs on anyone

If that's the case, then your SD either had a crappy lawyer or simply buckled under pressure of a group that didn't bring a court case forward. However, the fact that it was on school property but a privately sponsored class implies that there was more to it than that. For example, let's say the instructor didn't evangelize in any way yet taught the book of Genesis as if it was literal history...then there is a problem right there.

The sponsorship was for supplies for students. Can't have the school spending money on bibles of a teacher.

They may have worked something out to keep it but I know the organizations that sponsored it were not allowed to do so further

Here is an article about it if you're interested.

What sunk our district was the teachers of the class were not licensed. If you don't have a teaching license you obviously don't know how to teach

Mutation Theory

Or one of the 57 other theories of evolution that science has settled on? I missed the article where they settled it.

It is a theory...period. I believe it...but...Im not close minded enough to think that there could not be another explanation that my limited brain capacity can not understand now. Im open to damn near anything we think is real?...being totally wrong. As humans?....We are a very arrogant.
