MyBB Game Week: @TOL and Akron
Man, I thought the loss was painful but that troll was 100 x worse. Anyway, the troll is gone so we can move on...

We have struggled badly in Toledo over the last few years (but beat them in Ypsi).

Then we get to face a tough Akron team which lost Saturday to Ohio when Big Dog got into foul trouble as MAC refs continue to love their whistles (I think they called 3 Ts on Akron, alone; 4 total. No fights, no chairs, etc. Looked like CYO basketball to me.)

P.S. Hopefully tomorrow morning we won't be talking about the NFL officials...

Steve,

I believe last year we beat UT on the road to spring us into the MAC tournament. This is a must win. If we beat Toledo then we have a good chance to go to 2-0 this week by beating Akron on Friday. If we lose to UT then I predict 0-2 for the week. We have got to find a way to beat UT.

Go EMU!

Go EMU!

You're RIGHT.

We beat TOL on the road (I think we needed the win to get the home game in the MAC tourney) and then at home the first game of the MAC tourney.

It had been the previous years that the home teams won big.

Are there really any games on the schedule at this point that are not must win? The inconsistency and incompetence of the last two games has really killed us. Just about have to go at worst 6-2 to end the season in order to be in a good spot for the tournament.

RE: Game Week: @TOL and Akron
Let's hope for a good game tonight.

Last night I watched this game and it will be hard to top: (Cavs shot 50% behind the arc. Wiz shot almost 90% from the FT line. Both teams shot over 50% from the field).

http://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400900174

I'd be happy if we shoot 40% behind the arc.

TOL is a 2 1/2 point favorite at home. Ball State @ Akron get the evening going at 6:00 p.m., need the Zips to take down Ball State.

I wish we would remove the phrase "cut down the nets, no doubt about it" because 1) that will inspire the opposing team and 2) it's arrogant. I don't understand why Murphy would pick that phrase

T-shirts and phrases don't inspire opposing teams. This is collegiate basketball. If that is what it takes to motivate the players then they have bigger issues.
In my opinion the phrase is really just stating what every teams big goal is; win the tourney and move on to the dance. So if we want to say that it motivates the other team it also serves as a reminder to our team of what are goal is and what we need to accomplish every time we step on the floor.

I disagree. Certainly D1 athletes have a bigger motor and drive than the average player, but I know that I'd bring a little extra playing against a team with arrogance.

I'd think the sight of JT4 more than a shirt would motivate TOL players.

I'll suggest, now that you raised the issue, is that JT4 brings out the 'best' in opposing players. No one sleeps on EMU MBB since JT4 has been on the roster.

Just my two cents.

RE: Game Week: @TOL and Akron
I've been lurking for a while and nearly quit the board over that troll.

Anyway, if our goal is what EagleTotem had always said it was - a first round bye in the MAC Tournament - meaning a top 4 MAC finish - then the loss to NIU put us a game behind NIU, Ball State, and Ohio for that spot. Those three teams are 6-4. Four other teams are 5-5, including EMU. Toledo and Bowling Green are both in the next rung down at 4-6.

GOAL ONE: Get a game back from Ball, NIU or Ohio. EMU has away games against Ball and Ohio coming up yet, and a home stand against NIU.

GOAL TWO: Don't give up ground to the other three 5-5 contenders, Buffalo, Kent State, CMU. Only CMU (away) is still on the schedule. Also, since this is the MAC, expect at least one of the 4-6 teams to flirt with success toward the end of the season.

Over the next 8 games, I don't think a 5-3 record gets it done. I think it puts us around fifth in the MAC.

But aside from Akron, EMU could beat any team on that schedule. That's the frustrating part about it.

Agree.. JT4, Ray Lee, and Bond.

Dambrot is on record that Akron is more worried about Lee than Thompson

Yup, we can definitely agree on that. There is also no doubt that the refs know when JT4 is in the house too. Whistles ready and a big bullseye on his back.

our defense looks nice - lots of turnovers, shot clock violations, etc. but we're not translating anything into points. it's partially missed shots and partially a lack of teamwork creating good looks.

RE: Game Week: @TOL and Akron
we've ahd a nice amount of turnovers, but the same glaring hole in our defense has been there all year - a forward on the baseline within 5 minutes of the hoop is guaranteed open on every possession. once teams figure that out (and every team in the last 7-8 games has figured it out) they have an easy shot or draw a quick foul. Murphy needs to make an adjustment. unclear why he's so stubborn about this.
