It says in the dnr article that Bourne is working on agreements with all of this year's assistants. Is that almost unheard of to not lose a single assistant from one year to the next?

I am eager to see how Coach Houston does with his own recruits in a couple of years.

For this existing staff - for sure I would say that's the case.

Trott was on a 3 year deal the others were year to year and the article says they are working on new deals. 75k added to the base is a huge deal for us. When you throw in this year's incentives netted 87.5k (they will go up next year the way I read it) he has the opportunity to pull in nearly a half million a year. That should really help us keep him around.

The pay might be better else where in low G5 but when you add the facilities, atmosphere, etc here it should really make him think twice!!

say great job by JMU in making this happen.

Anyone can go and rewatch the postgame on-field interview with Houston where he's standing in the middle of the crowd that rushed the field. When the reporter asks about the scene and Houston yells something like "THIS IS JMU NATION!"...the joy on his face tells me this means a lot to him. Having great facilities and gear is nice. Being able to have a great staff is better. Winning is even better. I think atmosphere may mean the most to him. Money is obviously in there too, but I think hitting nearly half a million per year if he wins the NC or at least comes close is enough that unless he gets a P5 offer...he's not going anywhere. He's bought in, which is the best possible news for anyone connected with the school. I would take Houston over pretty much any coach in the country, FBS included. He just fits here.

Hasn't seemed to have problems recruiting the guys he wants. It's truly an exciting time to be a fan.

It generally is, when we had the year we had and we play at the level we do.

The lowest base paid in FBS is Doug Martin at New Mexico State - $376,044.

Using my JMU mathematics that tells me he still makes less than every FBS coach in America.

I think it was a solid proactive move by JMU, but again he would make a higher base working for any FBS team in the country.

Not discounting any of your information. Reading the article, it is apparent HCMH puts a dollar figure on stability for his family. The Valley is a good place to live and raise kids. Perhaps he puts a dollar figure on winning, happiness, and competing for championships as well.

All jobs in this world are temporary when you think about it. HCMH will eventually leave JMU. Sounds like he is in no hurry though which is good. When he does leave - hopefully with several national titles on his CV - I'm hopeful he optimizes his chances of success at the next level. And, who knows? Maybe he will help lead JMU into an upcoming middle tier of NCAA FB, which currently includes the G5, and a conference that best suits the entire athletic program and the university as a whole.

Another thing I just realized is that he's probably safe outside of a high level G5 or P5 school and probably even a local one too. VA/NC/SC region.

UVA just hired a coach a year ago and their prior coach (london) came from the FCS. I think it may be "controversial" in charlottesville to go after an FCS coach for 2 of your 3 coaches if they ever have to part ways with Mendenhall. That could potentially rule them out as a suitor.

True, but total compensation is the most important thing #, not base. As has already been said, next year with a deep playoff run Houston could be making 450-475k in total compensation. That won't be lower than all the G5..

In my mind if I'm one of the bottom 1/3 FBS teams I'm picking up the phone.

At no point was I concerned about losing the prior coach. This one for the last two months I knew was something special. There is not an amount we can offer if FBS is really interested. I think we all believe in his sincerity, but if someone offers double......

There are certain coaches you can tell are special - this is one...

JMU needs the stability as much as HCMH does. He's moved 3 times in the last 4 years. We've had 3 head coaches in the last 4 years.

Smelling the roses indeed.

(HCMH will hopefully groom a successor over the coming years to promote from within and keep rolling in the event he chooses to leave for greener pastures)

Personally I would say that is the foundation for the second cake.

Well said and this is truly fantastic news! With everything a coach gets at JMU, if he's good he'll win and things will be great. In other words, JMU will continue to be really good with Houston in charge, and Houston will always, barring scandal of course, have random G5 chances for the next few years anytime he wants them so no need to hurry out to friggin' San Marcos. On the other hand, if he wins another title, or even just keeps the program in the top 10 year after year for a few more years, the local P5 dream job is probably more achievable that way than by jumping to a mediocre G5 now.

And not to cross the streams, but if three or four years down the road JMU ever gets another shot at FBS, which G5 spot would Houston rather be? At the place he's rooted his family and really built something sustainable that's filled with momentum or in Storrs, CT or Mobile, AL, or El Paso, TX? No brainer.

For this existing staff - for sure I would say that's the case.

Hoping for the best, but it would be near miraculous to keep the staff together. Several of these guys have made significantly more $ at previous stops. You would have to assume they'd be looking to head back to FBS asap. Also, while the head coaching jobs have been filled, I would assume there is still plenty of shuffling to be done among assistant coaches.

eh...kinda disagree on guys like Stinespring, Trott, Hanson, and Kirkpatrick. They've been to the next level, and the grass isn't always greener. If a P5 comes calling with a coordinator job, then sure. But stability means a lot, especially for a guy like Stiney.

I think Coach will be patient. About 1/2 a million a year in Harrisonburg is a pretty good life when you are going to be winning games every year. Is Shaka Smart having a great time in Austin, TX right now? Sometimes it is not about the buck. Someday he may get the offer he cannot refuse, but money will not be the only factor. See the post about Rip Scherer a couple of weeks ago Great job by the administration being aggressive.
