Is ODU now a Football school?
Since basketball has been down since 2011 and football is getting better each year with bowl victory and unlimited potential, do we now call ourselves a football school? For the longest time ODU was a basketball school but I kinda feel like that is changing at least till we have another good run in basketball again....

Well, one way to look at it is that we were a basketball school by default.

Does this matter? Will basketball recruits say "no, thats a football school?" Will fans lose interest in basketball if it has the hypothetical title of football school?

Not yet. Once the current Foreman Field is remodeled, then perhaps it will feel more like a football university. I cant believe we plan to build up to only 22k. That seems short sighted. I guess if we start having seasons like 2016 and wins against Power 5 programs, maybe ESPN analysts will call us "a scary bunch" like they said about Georgia Southern, when they nearly beat Georgia. Im really glad ODU brought back football, as a fan I have two of my favorites sports to look forward to every year!

I think we're a 'whoever has the better season' school.

The only reason it matters is because however the AD views it affects the funding.

My take is that we are a basketball school at heart. If we got into the AAC, I think you would see that.

My feeling is as far as the new stadium. We are building what we can afford without putting on the backs of the students. When we have enough money to build phase 2 (without student fee's) that's when it will happen. The days of growing the athletic department using fees are over.

There's no reason we can't be both, have a very well-rounded program. Frankly, I don't get the question or why someone feels it has to be asked.

Our football program is no better than our basketball program. In fact, just last year we were .500 in football. Can you imagine the pandemonium if our basketball team had just finished .500??? Our basketball team is, and always has been better than our football program. Maybe in the near future football can catch up, but it's not even close historically at this point.

That's a good point. When are expectations for a avg season are no worse than 8 wins a year that's a .750.

One way to look at this thing is from the stand point, How often in the recent past, since we have been playing football, have the likes of North Carolina State, North Carolina, Virginia etc. been willing to come to Norfolk and play us in basketball? And we play in some remodeled 70 year old stadium with Johnny Houses.

I'm more of a basketball guy, but we are a football school in the sense that, any future conference move, future allocations of resources, etc. will be driven and determined by football.

Otherwise, we would likely be in the A10.

We are a Women's Basketball school, though you'd never know it from what you've seen on the court the last several years. I was just talking about the old womens teams and the field house this morning. The person I was talking to said the best basketball game they ever saw was when ODU beat Purdue in the NCAA Sweet Sixeteen in the field house. That may be the loudest ODU game I was ever at too. Reputations are hard to break, and nationally, many still think we have a great womens hoops program. Sadly, we don't.

My best women's basketball memory was when we beat UVA at the Ted in the 2008 NCAA tourney to reach the Sweet 16. The 3-pointer by Jazzmin Walters with 4.8 seconds left to take the lead followed by the block at the key by Tiffany Green to seal the game was epic. The close loss to Tennessee at the Ted during the Candace Parker era is a close second.

Hands down the best women's game was the Stanford final 4 game when we were getting crushed at the half and came back to win. Best in person moment was when we beat UCONN, I have the game ball from that game in a duffle bag in my garage/.

Answer:

1. Recruiting presence in this area is more important for football
2. They are not scared that they will lose in football
3. Basketball teams can get away with playing a bunch of MEAC teams in the preseason, football cannot. Also, big time basketball teams don't have a ton of non con games that are not made for TV events. When they do play those games, they will be at home, and they will not present a challenge.
