Who won the coaching carousel season (rank em)
1 USF. Good hire with a nice fit. Not a fan of USF running TU's offense.
2 Tulsa. By virtue of never stepping foot on the carousel
3 Cincy. OSU's D was what killed Tulsa. This is an improvement.
4 UH. Not a smash hit IMHO, but solid.
5 SMU. Keeping Morris around was very important.
6 Temple. Losing Rhule was a guy punch to a conference champ.

The rest of the teams are N/A right now.

1) WMU---amazingly held on to PJ.

2) USF--won the coaching carousel for teams that lost a coach.

2) Cincy--P5 Ohio St guy with good area recruiting connections. The last Meyer coordinator worked out pretty well.

4) UT--got a good coach who can turn them around quick.

5) Temple/UH---Depends on who Temple gets as to how these two shake out.

6) Oregon--Good coach, but a terrible fit for the Pacific Northwest.

1. Cincinnati getting rid of Tuberville is hugely positive
2. Tulsa keeping Montgomery
3. SMU keeping Morris
4. Trading Herman for Applewhite is a step down

USF & Temple are TBD. It's hard to say if USF if a step up or a step down at the moment. Temple hasn't hired a coach yet.

May be a surprise to some but...

1. Houston - Major Applewhite is the closest thing UH has had to Art Briles in terms of HS recruiting ties in 10 years. Sumlin had ties to Houston, but that's not the same as being the former star QB at Texas. When Kyle Allen, Bryson Smith, and Daniel Young, tweeted their support for Coach Applewhite that was like a Top 10 win.
Aside from Herman, Applewhite is the next best thing. The culture and philosophies stay the same, and a new HC wont come in and try to move a player like D'Eriq King to another position. It's essential that Houston maintain its versatility in how it employs the QB.

2 USF - Charlie Strong is a natural fit. This is actually an upgrade over Willie Taggert. Like Major, Strong has deep connections in Florida. His age may make him a statue-quality hire for USF.

3. Cincinnati - Luke Fickell. AGAIN, Cincy went with a coach that has deep recruiting ties in the state! He will give the Bearcat program a personality. Undefeated wrestling champion in High School. This is a bad dude. And, as was said, he has that Urban Meyer connection that served Houston well.

Temple - TBD

How is Strong a better hire than Applewhite?

He may be a bigger NAME but how is he a better coaching candidate for the 2017 season...from what we know?

Our leaders decided NOT to even consider Strong because there were MULTIPLE examples during his time at UT where he looked incompetent as a head coach. And that was with the top talent in the country and with his team 100% behind him.

He might end up reviving his career at USF but he was such a poor candidate that UH didn't even care enough to talk to him to see his plan.

Applewhite has been OC at some MAJOR MAJOR programs....hear of Alabama or Texas? Plus he was OC at Rice and while at Houston was the sitting OC that beat Florida State, Oklahoma and Louisville twice.

Many here are selling Applewhite way short. UH got a value buy because of his indiscretion but this isn't about that this is about "best coaching hire".

Not rose colored. I wanted Coach Orlando, remember?

However, when 3 of your top recruits/players snub Texas offers and reaffirm their commitment to the program, that's a great early sign.

Texas could have really used Kyle Allen (coming off a redshirt year, grown man, with 2 to play) ... but a guy of his caliber wanted to be coached by Major.

Strong and Fickell have yet to yield dividends.

He coached 3 hours away, had a pipeline in the state of Texas, probably could have landed us a big time recruit or two, but our leaders didn't think enough about him as a "coach" to even bring him in for an interview.

He wasn't even on our long list at all....... let alone a list that had him ranked higher than Applewhite.

If we really wanted Charlie Strong, he would be the coach at UH...we said thanks...but no thanks.

I'm leaning Applewhite bc he is an Offensive Mind and it provides Continuity.

The way College Football has been going the last several years Offensive Coaches have had more success.

You said no thanks because it would be bad optics for UH to take a HC just fired by UT. It would hurt your perception. Let's be smarter.

..and because we could NOT pull another Levine (coach who couldn't motivate, prepare, or coach up talent). His UT team cared so much about him that they threatened to boycott the last game of the season but even with all the motivation in the world...they got blown out by TCU.

That followed loss to Kansas (the WORST team in P5). His multiple coaching blunders is what caused him to be a bad candidate and I like Charlie but he is NOT a better candidate than Applewhite in 2016.

IF Applewhite is good you can see UH picking up right where Herman left them. Not many other candidates out there could have done that.

Here's a small video produced by the LHN that tells a little about Major. I think he has all he needs to succeed. Looking forward to seeing who is on his staff.

So they hired a Texas alum and former qb. Houston is the coach training school for Texas

If Herman fails I have a hard time seeing UT hiring another coach at Houston. Their fans will be demanding a Chip Kelly or Peterson (someone with more time on the big stage).

Herman is a gamble for them that they don't usually take.. 2 seasons as a HC.. They'll curse themselves for making a stupid move.

UH was so confident in Major, they hired him immediately, right?

My UTexas connections love Applewhite as a player. If he wins at UH, he WILL be the next UT coach. Applewhite is perfect for UH now, better than Strong who is tainted in Texas. We will see how he works out as a Headcoach. However, if Morris can pulls off a good next year, SMU may finally begin to out recruit UH. Good luck to us both.

He's gonna be waiting on that opening for a while. js
