And yes, I know USF's attendance sucks. Not the freaking point.
Embarrassing to whom?

Hell, the Army-Navy game is routinely played in Philadelphia, and people make the trip up there. It's exactly the same distance from Philly to Anapolis as from Anapolis to Philly.
Where are all the Temple fans? (Rhetorical question.)
Temple is bringing around 8K fans between the school allotment and those bought through the Navy/secondary market. And that was the count as of yesterday (so there will be a good walk up crowd as well). Temple is not the issue here.
I like Cincy but there are a few bitter fans in this thread.
My seats are across from the visiting band sections.
They showed out, and from the numbers in cherry and white and doing "T" "U" arm motions etc definitely believing 8,000+

Yup...you did and that is notable.
the AAC won't have 20k.
The ratings will suck too...Temple v Navy just doesn't move the needle.
At least in the case of WMU, people might have watched on TV to see if you could go undefeated which is nigh impossible to do these days.
the AAC game has no cache.
First - congrats to the MAC on the big draw for ccg. Even neutral site, conference focused event, congrats to WMU on that draw -- I'll buy that the number well above any previous MAC ccg was the Detroit area turning out for the Broncos.
As far as Bearcat's continued self-loathing flagellation of the AAC, he is as usual just wrong.
While AAC ccg attendance will be WELL below the MAC ccg, it will also be well over 20K.
As of Thursday ticket office was saying 22,000 sold. The silver lining there is that buying tickets on 6 days' notice will have few no-shows. A big chunk of the sales being 33% below season average is season ticket holders not taking their option -- those who DID click "yes" will show up.
Why? If anyone really wants to know I'll give you more info than you actually want on how you average 33K when your student body is 4,300. The result though is a somewhat less fervent dangerous fanbase. Suffice to say, I am a little disappointed that the season ticket holders aren't all-in on this game, but I am not overly surprised.
Temple reportedly doing their part - sold out allotment I hear, but I don't know any details. Available seats via Navysports.com are overwhelmingly on the visitors' side.
Fanbase overall though - 22K would drop our average to 31K over six games at NMCMS this year. I'll take that. Puts us middle of the pack in the AAC. Miles ahead of the G4 conferences, especially MAC, and what, 140% of WMU's.
Ratings? I'll wager right now that Navy at noon on ABC does better than MAC ccg on Friday night on the deuce.
Do you think that quite possibly Navy fans are waiting on a possible Cotton Bowl berth and holding their money for that? If there is one thing I know from 28 years in, it's that military people are very logical and practical.
I don't think there were a lot of people for whom CCG-Bowl was an either-or.
I think for Navy fans who are 2-6 hour drive away, Army-Navy in Baltimore next week more of a decider. They had the five home games + A-N on the calendar; doing this on short notice when you've preplanned B-More 7 days later gets into the too hard box.

I prefer home team hosting. Only two conferences can pull it off SEC and B1G.

I don't think so. I could see that having a small tick less... but it's the Conference Championship Game. And there's no way a vast majority believed that if Navy won, they'd be in the Cotton Bowl. I could see people thinking the "could" having stronger weight than likely was, sure. But that's not going to make them skip a Conference Championship game in Navy's own backyard. :)
I think it's the one week notice thing.

I don't profess to know anything about Navy's fan culture so that's why I asked a Navy alum. Thanks though...

Ugh.
Navy draws 22,815 with a conference title and a possible Cotton Bowl bid on the line. With Temple within driving distance.
Chet Gladchuck really failed to rally the troops today.

Even houston had more, and we would have sold it out if temple had not decided to sell back their allotment at the last moment.

Temple fans travelled fairly well. Navy just could't get anyone there.

I mean, we sold everything out--allotment, tailgate, etc. Not sure what else we could do.

Navy has it tough because they are not a local fanbase but a national one, heck, they're an international fanbase. Some who may have wanted to attend the game couldn't because they had obligations where they were or in turn didn't have enough money to get to Annapolis and attend the game. You can plan months in advance but they had two weeks to prepare.
That said, Temple is figuratively right up the street and should have guaranteed at least something close to a sellout. You won't get a better scenario for a CCG sellout as a matter of fact.

They could have had even more fans there. It wasn't a weekday game, so it wouldn't be impossible for people to change their plans.
That said, it is what it is. LOL at anyone who tries to sell the idea of a US neutral site game.

Um, a better scenario would've been at the Linc, not 2.5 hours away?

RE: Navy nowhere near sold out for Temple
My point is that Navy only has a 30K seat stadium to fill and the closest team to them played them in a game where tickets were on sale with only a week's notice, two if you were a Navy fan going no matter what. Maybe Memphis at Cincinnati can compare or ECU at Navy since ECU travels but that's as close as it gets.

ECU has a fairly large alumni base in the Northern VA/DC/MD area so if we ever played in a AAC CG at Navy we would probably bring a decent crowd but with it being an extra game that nobody really planned for and once again having a Bowl game trip to budget for as well, I doubt we would bring a crowd much better than Temple did.
I went to High School in the DC area when my Dad was at the Pentagon and we went to Navy games 45 minutes away. Navy is one of those schools that gets adopted by locals who turn out to support it despite not graduating from the there. The Pentagon always had a deal on tickets and if the weather is nice it is hard to beat a day in Annapolis for Football and wandering around the harbor to eat and have a few beers. I thought there would be more people at the game yesterday

Yes, the poor attendance gave the AAC title game a small-time look and feel on TV.

If there were 22,000 at the American CCG yesterday, 75% were Temple fans. IMO, it was a damn fine showing.
Props to the MAC CCG for that games attendance, but seriously, no MAC team should ever squawk about numbers. Ever. Temple led that conference in attendance when we were there, which tells you all you need to know.
That being said, Western Michigan should be in the Cotton Bowl.

Did Houston sell out their home championship game last year? No. Apparently that was Temples fault for not buying tickets halfway across the country for a game a few days later. Now temple brings 8K fans plus to navy and again it is their fault the game doesn't draw well.
Houston had very good crowds this year with a top ten team, Tom Herman and Oklahoma/Louisville on the schedule. But let's see how that goes next year.
I fully expect Houston to bring 5K to 10K fans to Philly next year for the game with Temple as there is six plus months to plan accordingly and they are now apparently similar to Penn State/Michigan when traveling to away games.

They should have used the USF counting method of announcing the place as sold out but actually having 10K to 15K less in the stands.
