15-24 is just ridiculous, but then again most of those shots were wide open shots! Their quick guard would penetrate, we would collapse toward the ball, and the guard would hit the open player beyond the arc - time and time again.

I wonder if going to a zone ( we did for only about 1-2 minutes ) , having seen what they were doing against our man defense, might have worked out better against Furman.Iagree 100% that the collapsing of 2 or more defenders to the penetrating ballhandler is what caused all those open shots at the perimeter.

If you look at the stat lines for Lindenwood and APB, you could see a game like this coming for UAB...

Lindenwood 3PT: 16-35 45.7%

A-PB 3PT: 10-26 38.5% (9-14 64.3% in the 2nd half)

Yep. Last year we had trouble closing out games because of our poor defense, especially on the perimeter. So far I've seen zero improvement on that front.

Looked to me like we are having a lot of blown assignments and guys being out of position to even be able to close out on shooters. Even when we are in position we have done a poor job of closing out on the shooter. Last year we did do a better job than thus far this year IMHO but I know it seems like we have not. Part of it is pressing more.

Clean up the defensive lapses and make sure shooters know we are going after them even if we have to put a few on their backside early on. You nail a dude early and he will be skidish. leave him wide open an he gains confidence. Now we will leave a guys open utilizing the press more but what we have seen is ridiculous. Guys not rotating over quick enough or even not rotating at all is unacceptable and needs to be cleaned up and coach knows it. He will get it done. I remember Anderson's first year and people flipping out early.

If you put those Furman guys out there and no one playing defense, I'm not sure they could shoot it that well again. Maybe they could, but it was an unbelievable performance by them. I think they will be good in their conference. Still can't believe they lost their first game. UAB just needs to figure out a path without Norton. Hopefully that won't take much longer to figure out.

I remember how half-haased our last coach looked in his first games, staring like a deer caught in the headlights and refusing to call a TO because damnit Old Roy never did and a four-point turnaround turned into a 36-point run.

It's one thing to sit next to the boss, but another to have to actually lead. And you can only learn that by leading.

Even so, the left-handed chick in the halftime football promo would have played better perimeter D than I saw last night (but not the last guy who threw).

At some point the players have to have their own come to Jesus.
Ehsan can instruct them but they have to execute.

Exactly. And I've been on teams that have had to do this in the past. Sometimes it takes a devastating loss to realize what is going on. You can either get down on yourselves and say the season is lost because nick is gone and you have a new coach; or you can pick yourselves up and decide you are all going to pick up a little bit of the slack from missing Nick and find a way to win. I imagine we are going to see a very different team Thursday night.

Listening to Ehsan and Hak in the post game press conference after the game I can all but assure you they'll be motivated and playing with more urgency Thursday.

I don't believe Ehsan and staff underestimated Furman but I do believe the players were resting on their laurels a bit.

Here's the thing ...

We have an extremely talented basketball team. Possibly one of the most talented in a decade or more. They won a large portion of games last season with ease at home. They've read all the chatter from me and others in the media saying the home non-conference schedule is really soft aside from Auburn.

With Nick gone they are still a very good team but the margin of error has become significantly more narrow. They are an older team and they are going to need to start acting accordingly.
