But of course the African Americans don't get to be a majority anywhere.
Close down those abortion clinics and we'll see where we are on that in 10 or 20 years.

so by your own admission you only care about the political implications with 2 senators and 1 rep verse only having one rep added to MD. pretty hypocritical IMO

Quote:Voters in the District of Columbia passed a measure on Tuesday in favor of petitioning Congress to become a state in the union.
79 percent of voters cast votes in favor of the ballot measure, which splits the district into a residential state with a small federal district in the middle of it for government buildings and monuments, as we have reported.
The newly approved measure had four parts:
- agree that the District should be admitted to the Union as the State of New Columbia
- approve of a Constitution of the State of New Columbia to be adopted by the Council
- approve the State of New Columbia's boundaries
- agree that the State of New Columbia shall guarantee an elected representative form of government.
What do you think, any chance in hell of happening?
I say no. It would be an automatic two Dem senators, and Reps won't allow that into their rigged system.
No, and it should not. In no way should a city be given the power of a state in our government. Let them vote in Virginia or Maryland senate elections and maybe give them *1* representative in congress.
The federal government's power has expanded. I don't see any need for a district anymore. Give DC back to Maryland. We already gave the southern part back to Virginia a couple hundred years ago.
If we really need a district, just cut it off about K Street and 3rd and 395 and make that area a National Park as well and prevent any new residential development. There's very little now. Give the rest and Watergate south of K as well to Maryland. Make a deal with Maryland to fund their mass transit since the federal government is the biggest employer. (but if you keep part, you have to amend the constitution so that the thousand or so people who live there don't get 3 electoral votes).

"It is also fiscally responsible as we will not have to buy any additional desks, pay additional staff or incur any other additional expense. Plus a flag with 51 stars just seems unwieldy."
when something sounds so stupid but fits into traditional conservative talking points you are not sure how to react...
"That 1 representative would represent 1/435 of the population and would be assigned based on that with no regard to state, race, politics or any other consideration just as it is done today every 10 years."
But some states have a population that is less that 1/435. So they are given a > 1/435 presence per vote and the biggest states get a < 1/435 presence to make the system work.

No amendment needed. Just pass a bill reducing DC to a small area with maybe 400 people. When Virginia got its part of DC back, there was no amendment needed.
If you'd like, simply pass a bill giving it back to Maryland. Then the next day admit that area to the Union as a new state..

White people preventing Blacks from getting representation would be one problem with DC's status as a colony.
Taxation without representation is another.

Why ON EARTH would a f*cking CITY get TWO Senators? I've got a word for that: unfathomably stupid.
Either they can get a HOR vote if DC meets the CD census size target ... or they can pool in and vote with the state of Maryland for their senators.

Just one more thing. I'm doubled over in laughter. And then, even better, you use the word hypocritical. I AM AMUSED!!!!!!!

Don't whine when people go to the streets when their votes don't count and they can't get a seat at the table even when they have 40 million people. The Senate is a massive gerrymander aimed at minorities.
Actually Asians ARE a majority in one state...And surprise, that state sends more Asians than other states to Congress (it is Hawaii). Hispanics are the majority in a couple of states, and that is starting to be reflected in their represenation.

WE JUST HAD A BLACK PRESIDENT! How with a straight face say that there is no representation.
For the past two years
* 15 percent of the nation is black
* 8 percent of congress house is black
* 11 percent of the supreme court is black
* 100% of the presidents is black...
And I honestly don't care if those numbers go up or down... Clone Clearance Thomas and give him the empty seat on the court...

you do realize there is no need for an amendment to admit DC as a state? However according to your own link a constitutional amendment is required if Maryland says they don't want DC back which is a strong possibility given dems have traditionally been against it while GOPers in favor of it. Also when VA got their land back the 23rd amendment didn't exist and wouldn't for another 120 or so years. Today it does and it is not compatible with retrocession. It even says the last retrocession proposal have was tied to a repeal of the 23rd amendment.
Clearly you didn't bother to read your own link. It requires a new amendment and the repeal of another amendment.

However it came to be, don't ever tell us that you have a mandate. No. You don't. You lost the popular vote for Congress (both houses) and for President.
Enjoy frustrating the will of the people. Don't be surprised if they take to the streets. Because voting doesn't win for them.

Umm what... I'm not sure if you missed typed that or if your definition of gerrymander has jumped the shark.
To gerrymander is to manipulate the boundaries of an electoral constituency so as to favor one party or class. The state bounders were not drawn to favor a people or class.
What you are proposing, on the other hand, is gerrymandering. Creating political boundaries specifically to favor a electoral constituency

so lets ask Maryland then? hmm?
I have a problem with any one city getting two US senators and I could care less if it's DC or Lexington, Kentucky... It's a city and that's a massivly disproportionate amount of power to hand them.

The EC was designed when there wasn't a popular vote, for a country that had 97% of the nation living in rural areas, in an era where the states identified more as separate nations than one unified nation.

So yea, maybe he is thinking politics but please don't pretend that you are not.
that's literally the point I'm making. It's hypocritical for one of us to take the moral high ground on this regarding the politics. yet it should be noted that what I am suggesting is the simplest most straight forward plan possible. while you guys argue on it based on what IMO are anti-american values.
Right amending the constitution is way more simple than handing Maryland's land back to them.... We have already done it once (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_o...trocession)
you do realize there is no need for an amendment to admit DC as a state? However according to your own link a constitutional amendment is required if Maryland says they don't want DC back which is a strong possibility given dems have traditionally been against it while GOPers in favor of it. Also when VA got their land back the 23rd amendment didn't exist and wouldn't for another 120 or so years. Today it does and it is not compatible with retrocession. It even says the last retrocession proposal have was tied to a repeal of the 23rd amendment.
Clearly you didn't bother to read your own link. It requires a new amendment and the repeal of another amendment.
so lets ask Maryland then? hmm?
I have a problem with any one city getting two US senators and I could care less if it's DC or Lexington, Kentucky... It's a city and that's a massivly disproportionate amount of power to hand them.
you literally have nothing more than an arbitrary line that a rural area doing it is acceptable but an urban area with an even larger population is unacceptable.
Lexington is part of a state already. DC is not. sorry facts are inconvenient for you.
