Chalk up Illinois senate race to Tammy Duckworth
She has a decent lead anyway over incumbent Mark Kirk. But the Republican blew it big time tonight in their Senate debate.
While discussing her desire to be in the Senate as a voice of reason to warn about the costs of war, Duckworth (who is a vet who lost both legs in Iraq) referenced her family's history of service, saying, "My family has served this nation in uniform, going back to the Revolution. I'm a daughter of the American Revolution. I've bled for this nation."
Kirk responded: "I had forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington."
Duckworth's mom is from Thailand but her dad is American and her family has traced their roots on his side back to the American Revolution. Her dad served in World War II and they do have a relative who fought in the American Revolution.

RE: Chalk up Illinois senate race to Tammy Duckworth
If if her family's service history wasn't true how would such a racially charged comment be acceptable? That someone who lost two legs in defense of this country somehow sacrificed less because of her heritage?

I'm wondering how far she can ride her "I'm a disabled veteran, so elect me" train. It's gotten her this far.

Kirk's an idiot to start with, as he's shown time and time again.
So I would not be surprised to see this seat go to Duckworth.

I think Kirk caught lighting in a bottle back in 2010, when the fallout from full Democratic control of the government was at its height. It would have taken a marvelous campaign to win back the seat - something Kirk has not done.

Kirk and Johnson are accidental senators who improbably rode the 2010 wave, and the accident will be corrected in about a week.
Kirk has tried to craft a moderate image on social issues and by denouncing Trump but fact is he's as hawkish and neocon-ish as they come.
I've met Tammy Duckworth at private fundraisers and been to a couple of speeches. She's a good progressive Democrat who will be a good ally of Bernie in the Senate. I'm excited to have Tammy and Feingold back in the Senate, bolstering the progressive wing of the party with Warren and Bernie, and hopefully they have many more joining them.

That's what the wealthy want you to think. Progressives want to expand jobs and services to the poor and middle class at the expense of the wealthy, and the wealthy convince everyone they really want gulags.

No, the wealthy try to convince people that when they hoard immoral sums of money for themselves, that's really creating jobs for everyone.

The only people who complain about other people's money are those who do not currently pay their fair share.

RE: Chalk up Illinois senate race to Tammy Duckworth
The comment wasn't as awful as it sounds. If you listen to the whole exchange, she was laying on pretty thick her family's military experience and how that would impact her decision making. She wasn't wrong, but it was a little much. His comment was meant to be sarcasm, but it didn't come off that way. It was an ill timed, poorly delivered comment. It was not racially charged.
That being said, he is a very moderate Republican, regardless of what Max says. So, if you vote for him, that is what you get.
Tammy Duckworth military service is undebatable. Beyond that though, she's a pretty empty suit. She's had a series of patronage type jobs in government and then won office. She's not a free thinker and is just a follow the party leaders type. Nothing she says strikes me as that interesting, or to be honest, very original.

UofMemphisstateU,
I'm complaining only about the rich not paying enough taxes, not that they are indeed rich.

Well the bar for being a "moderate" Republican these days is so low he might qualify.
She likes to talk about her humble background-- going on food stamps and free school lunches when her dad lost his job-- and how she feels a sense of obligation to the less fortunate. Also is a fair trader and wants to bring jobs back. Like I said I talked to her and she seemed sincere.

Well, he's pro-choice, for more gun control and is pro-gay marriage. Come on Max.
He's as neocon as Hillary. So, where does that leave him on your spectrum?
I don't doubt she is sincere. From when I've heard her speak, she sounds like she may be a decent person. I just don't see a lot of there, well, there. Especially coming from the political structure of this state, she seems to be very much a follower.
