Back to the original question
They wanted more teams playing in the Belt tourney but also wanted to "protect" the top seeds by having 7-10 and 8-9 play single elimination game to get to double elimination

Because everybody knows even the lowest seeds will have probably 1 "ace"

I asked and here's the forma for the tourney.

Each division winner is the #1 and #2 seeds. After that, it's conference winning percentages regardless of division to determine the remaining seeds. 7 v 10 and 8 v 9 in single-elimination games on Tuesday to determine who goes to the double-elimination.

I like formats that play-in the lower teams. It serves to further reward/protect your premier teams, the ones you want representing your conference. Basketball and baseball should both utilize such formats.

And yeah, my original response was all tongue in cheek. I do expect us to win, but it was light-hearted fun, hence the pot stirring emoji. I fully expect some "until proven flack" from all you guys/gals. But I don't think it was the Coastal fans who set "need to take it easy" tone...

We're a bunch who will largely to take our "newbie" lumps in stride and wait to show it on the field/court... as some of our ladies already are (we are more than a baseball add). We'll just wait for baseball to take care of it on the field too. All good.

I'm actually curious what percentage of coaches would not pitch their Ace in a Tuesday game. That's short rest for a College Ace to pitch on Thursday and then turn around 4 days later.

You might see teams who have clinched a spot, but know they play Tuesday intentionally rest their #2 or #3 guy last weekend of the season so he could pitch on Tuesday.

Well, we are the only league in the country to contain the defending National Champions. That helps.

THe SBC could absolutely wind up at or near the Top 5.

CCU and Louisiana will be preseason Top 20 clubs. South Alabama lost pitching, but they have stockpiled some good arms. Georgia Southern can pitch. If they're better offensively, they can challenge for a title. Little Rock loses Ryan Scott and not much else.

Texas State has to restock its pitching staff, but they are never bad, and won't be this year either. Troy has to replace two really good arms but they are always in the mix.

There aren't too many leagues in America with seven teams like the Sun Belt has.

It will be interesting to see how Coastal is this year. Sure we are defending champs but I expect a bit of a drop-off this year. We lose a ton of leadership, experience, and bats with the seniors that graduated and the juniors that went pro. We do bring back 2 of our top 4 pitchers for sure. I've heard that we will also bring back Cunningham (threw the final, game winning pitch in the CWS) who was drafted but never signed with the Tigers, but not certain. Plus it is just hard when every team gets up to beat the defending champs.

We do bring back some very talented guys though. So will be interesting to see if we can reload or have to rebuild.

It's looking like Cunningham will be here. If that's the case, then basically the Chants return all 4 of their starting pitchers.

Cajuns return their top four as well. But one of them is probably going to the bullpen because a newcomer will likely be the Sunday starter.

I"m telling you now. Beckwith against Leger on Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium will not be for the faint of heart.

Which reminds me...I have a cardiologist appointment about that time.

That's great. If Bilous can reach his potential this season then we will be extremely strong on the mound.

I wonder who our closer will be.

Yes, all of our guys got drafted or went FA. I don't even know/remember who we have left because the new roster isn't up yet.

Without looking, we did have one freshman that they threw in for a couple starts last year but, other than that, I couldn't begin to tell you who is going to pitch for us in 2017.

8 seniors graduated. 6 were pitchers. 5 of them went pro. 2 were weekend rotation, two rotated weekend and mid week the other was our closer.

Never a dull moment in TXST baseball.

How many days are you going to convince your bosses that you need to spend in Myrtle Beach to prepare for that series? 2 weeks?

Maybe he can do a remote from MB all week. To help feature the newest member of the conference.

On our end, we have basically all our pitching back, but our entire offense has graduated with the exception of Garrett Rucker and Joe Schrimpf. Plus we have to play at Georgia Southern, Coastal, and UL this year. Lots of great baseball trips for fans, but not fun for the team itself.

While that would be a wonderful idea, I still have to baseball in the midweek. Besides, no one would ever want to see me on the beach.

BTW, this new format thing, while accurate as far as I know, has NOT yet been approved by the Presidents. That may or may not be a formality since two more schools will have to travel and that could be a big expense for just one day.

Your quote at the end of your post reminds me: They are doing away with the "if you wanna host, you got it" and going back to the bid process for championships, if my info is correct.

Well darn, I was really looking forward to the first Sun Belt Tournament to be ever held at Ghetto Hogan Field. I was thinking half price for all crips members who wear their colors.

Excellent (and needed) upgrades. My only concerns about the ball park when I visited last spring were the outfield fences (needed to be a bit farther back...24 foot wall will give great ambiance) and an outdated scoreboard.

Both of those are being addressed. It'll be a great venue for the tournament.
