I say this as someone who went to school there: their fans were basically West Virginia fans, in terms of attitude and etiquette, who just happened to did not come from rural areas.

Don't miss them a bit, wasn't sad to see them go, don't want them back.

(caveat...of course I'm talking post 1992 when FSU joined...I know some of you might have more basketball feels from the 70s and 80s or whatever)

agreed

Louisville is actually making the Atlantic Division competitive instead of a one or two-horse race

The conference already has a strong academic profile and Wake gets more from the conference than they put in imo. I like Wake and am cool with them being here but I would like someone to lay out the benefits. People get really mad at me asking what Wake brings but it's a legitimate question in my mind.
Wake Forest used to have a great basketball program but have not been the same since the untimely death of Skip Prosser. The Deacons have missed 9 of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments.

In football, they've missed a bowl game 6 of the last 7 years and have won 1 ACC title since 1970 and only 2 in the history of the conference.

In short, they don't bring much of anything anymore...07-coffee3

Actually Dino Gaudio had the Deacs ranked #1 after Skip's death. But Dino couldn't or wouldn't keep the players under control like Skip did. Dino might be the answer to a trivia question some day....he was let go with a top 5 basketball team.

If I recall correctly, that was the infamous 2008-09 team. Solid team, but from an outsider's point of view, not as great as made out to be by some like Mike DeCourcy (he and I had a running battle on the topic about the overall strength of the ACC that year outside of UNC and Duke). Cuseroc might remember those posts - I believe he enjoyed them. 03-wink

The main claim to fame that year on the court for the Deacons were the victories they had over UNC and Duke at home and BYU on the road. All great wins, although BYU was more vulnerable at home that year than in previous seasons having not loss at home for three seasons, iirc. That season the Cougs also lost to a mediocre UNLV team later in the season at home as well.

Cheers,
Neil

That team had four NBA players in the starting line up including a future ALL Star. You were wrong.

Well, I have been known to be wrong before and no doubt will be wrong again in the future. But after my little debate with Mike DeCourcy, he conceded that I had a point. Again, not that Wake was a bad team that year, it was just not as great as many wanted to make them out to be. Definitely Top 25 but not Top 10 or even Top 15. More like in the 20s.

Cheers,
Neil

It deserved the #1 ranking when it got it that year. The fact that Gaudio squandered such a loaded team is a major reason he got fired.

Never said that it didn't earn it's #1 ranking during the season. But after the first week of the season they were only ranked #20, got up to #10 in mid-December due to an undefeated 9 games with the only ranked win over Baylor at home, got into the Top 5 after the road win over BYU which (as I indicated earlier) was a high perception win mainly because the Cougars had a tradition of not losing at home, got to #2 by beating UNC at home, got to #1 when Pitt lost, then lost to VT and tumbled out of the Top 5. And not even a win over Duke (at home) got them back into the Top 5 because they immediately lost the next two games at GT and at Miami.

The Demon Deacons were home warriors with a bad OOC SOS ranked 268 that year. Again, a solid team with some talent, but at the end of the day their #20 ranking after the 1st week of games was closer to the truth then them being ranked in the Top 10 in December/January.

Cheers,
Neil

Some talent being four NBA players in the starting line up, three of which were first round picks, one would be an NBA All-Star, and all four are still in the league.

And there were at least 5 Big East teams (and probably Marquette) that year that don't have the above that were better teams than Wake that year. So the above and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. Doesn't change the fact that Wake was a solid Top 25 team but overrated due to the high value perception that talent and wins over UNC and Duke at home and BYU on the road gave them that season.

Cheers,
Neil

Yeah there were six Big East teams better than Wake that year.

There's no reason to continue to discuss this.

He's doing the same to me. I've gotten -3'ed twice by a Syracuse fan and -2'ed twice by him. Sensitive bunch here...07-coffee3

Arguing for kicking out an ACC member should automatically be grounds to move a thread to the smack board. Since the mods here choose not to do that, then I'll neg rep anyone who does it.

NC State = South Carolina. No history, never been to a major bowl and the prospects of it ever happening are dim.

Maryland has won a national title in football(granted it was in the 1950's), has won a national title in basketball (2002) and has won conference titles in both major sports in the past 25 years. They aren't duplicating an existing media market, and they bring instant rivalries with all of the old school ACC programs because everybody hated them when they were here.
^^^ THIS ^^^
No single school from NC is as valuable as Maryland. UNC comes close.

The Tar Heels have a better brand, tho--

In football I see them as kinda like UCLA. They are not primarily known for football, but they have such a well known brand that it is easily sell-able on TV if they are good in football.

Yeah, I might buy that. UNC basketball bran >> Maryland basketball brand

So Cheaters >>>> Thugs. Got it.

Negative, ghostrider. I had these opinions before I met my husband. Of course our mutual disgust & disdain for UNC was a major plus when we first met. 03-cool
