RE: Strong is Out at Texas
In 2015 after a bad start, Strong demoted his co-OC's and promoted another guy.
In 2016 after a bad start, Strong demoted his DC's and took over the DC roll.
In 2015 and 2016 after bad starts, Bailiff has done nothing. In fact, I don't recall Bailiff every making any mid-season changes, no matter how horribly things might be going. He rarely makes changes after the season, regardless of how poorly things went. Assistants and coordinators under Bailiff seem to have remarkable job security.

Looks like Strong is our guy.
Let's see someone pull out the moneybags before we go jumping to conclusions. I've already had enough delusional hope this year.

Public private partnership? UT wants the Houston market, the clowns on Cullen (Mensa excepted) are pushing back. Merge UTHSC at Houston with Rice, get a Med School and move a UT undergrad competitor away from Houston for a generation, also positioning Rice to vault in the USNWR and global rankings without depleting the endowment. Suddenly Rice looks a whole lot better to the academic snobs ( sic P5 college presidents who continually need to maintain the fiction of unencombered student athletes.)

BEFORE Baylor imploded, at least one recruiting rating had UT's class at # 10, Baylor at 17. After at least 4 high-profile Baylor committs jumped ship to Texas, the rating no doubt bumped up at least a couple notches. No argues about his ability to recruit, but he had better start winning, or someone may well inherit some great athletes.

I don't think you can look at Mackovic or Strong's results over several years without also considering the results at TCU, Baylor, UH, and TAMU, which have all done much better over the last 6-8 years than the previous 20.
It's apparently not just Baylor that has dug into UT's recruiting, or benefited from their missteps.

RE: Strong is Out at Texas
New coaches coming in at a place like UT, especially after decades of Mack Brown success, are always on a short leash. It takes a couple of coaches burned before the elites relax their entitlement expectations enough to put up with a coach who takes more than one season to reload. John Mackovic suffered a similar fate after taking over for Fred Akers, one coach removed from the sainted Darrell Royal. If Fred Akers hadn't inherited Earl Campbell from coach Royal, he'd have gone quicker than he did also. Of course when you get beat 66-3 one week, then almost lose to Rice (which probably still holds the single game team rushing yards record against the Horns) the following week, it tends to get the fire the coach sentiments burning a little hotter.

RE: Strong is Out at Texas
Heard a Texas HS football coach tell me a story about their annual meeting in San Angelo after Strong's first season. He told me how Strong came into the meeting, did his speech, and then left immediately afterwards. Was clear to the audience that he did not want to be there. He contrasted this approach to Briles who was working the room, one of Texas HS coaches from the old days, stayed the entire conference, personable, respectful, etc.
Strong was viewed as arrogant, an outsider, and not willing to engage in the decades long process of how Texas College Coaches are supposed to engage Texas HS coaches. The guy telling me the story had an opinion that Strong initially viewed his role of only needing to win over recruits and parents and not really respecting the role of the HS coach in the process of influencing the kid. The Texas brand was enough and spoke for itself.
He has since changed his approach which really helped him recruiting last year but he did burn some bridges out-of-the-gate by not kissing the rings of the HS coaching fraternity. I think that does explain some of the recent recruiting differences that Baylor > Texas.
I took the lesson here as you can be an outsider and come in and change the culture but if you go too much to the other side of the boat, it can be as damaging as the status quo was before. Thus, important to focus on what you really want to change and what should really stay the same to help you. I think Charlie went too far and ultimately created a shorter leash for himself.

David McWilliams took over from Akers, and Mackovic took over from McWilliams. I don't think that Mackovic had any problem living in the shado of his predecessors.

We're now second:

Interesting.
Having helped host a bunch of those, they're actually a pretty fun event. I guess he was just too busy. But too busy with what? There's probably nothing more important to his success than being there at that event at that time.

I'm pretty sure BYU broke the rushing record when they trashed UT a few years back

Correct, they got 550. I looked it up. Still I'm proud we're second.
