RE: Southern Miss vs. UTEP discussion/prediction thread
We couldn't stop Jordan Chunn.
Chunn is good, but Aaron Jones is probably better than him.
Mullens is a turnover machine.
On the road.
True, our D has given up some points but mainly because Mullens is giving opposing offense's a short field all the time. Troy had about 300 yards of total offense.
Close game that could go either way.

Ok, this close game nonsense has to stop. I don't know what you guys are trying to sell but I'm not buying it. Yes, I predicted a UTEP win in this one but purely out of wishful thinking, not because there is anything concrete to hang that prediction on.
We were promised that our offense would be more creative this year and that we had an outstanding O-line. It has only looked good vs NMSU. Not good vs Texas which has a weak defense and even worse against Army. The USM defense would have to have something horribly wrong with it for UTEP to score 20 points.

I disagree with that. UTEP needs to improve enough to win it's last 4 home games plus 1 road game to get to 6 wins and a bowl. USM and LT are the next 2 games and UTEP will be decided underdogs in both. So 5 more wins needed out of the final 7 games. Beating either USM or LT would be gravy and big upsets.
They still have a shot at six wins but does that actually guarantee them a bowl spot? I know there wasn't enough 6-6 teams last year but what if there are more than enough 6-6 teams this year? Do they get in?

Our defense finally figured out how to tackle Chunn.

I feel like what's happened is our fanbase was hyped up to the idea being "6-0 when we play LSU" and then the loss to Troy happened. A lot of the fanbase didn't and doesn't give Troy enough credit for being a solid SunBelt contender (mainly out of pride and thought that "we're better than you" attitude- I was guilty of it) and thought of that game as more of an upset than it really was. We played lackluster- a lot of problems, Mullens looked lost, the playcalling was questionable- basically a combination of those two has led to the notion that "the sky is falling" here in Hattiesburg.

some did....but like any fan base, it was nothing more than being a fan going into the den of inequity....I called it "plausible"
the bottom line is Mullens/Daws_n need to figure something out quickly....
one can't deny that Mullens is staring down and/or forcing.....the 'why' is speculation that has been laid out...so again, it's his yips/reads or it's Daws_n.....there isn't another option....he's had the blocking/time/opens

RE: Southern Miss vs. UTEP discussion/prediction thread
Question for UTEP fans: Seriously, how does your fanbase feel about being in CUSA? I ask that because I kinda see you guys like USM. We live among two $ec schools and have to fight for respect. You guys have the Big 12, Pac-12 nearby, and a host of Texas schools. How do you guys imprint the state of Texas? I hope this doesn't come across as demeaning because I mean to be respectful. I am curious about it.

This is jmo but I see it this way.
For a long, long time, UTEP and El Paso have been the unwanted step child of Texas. The majority of the Texas population is in north, central and east Texas while El Paso is way, way out west. An after thought. Having grown up in EP I do remember that we felt much more a part of New Mexico and Arizona than Texas and yet there is still some pride in being a part of the state.
Athletically, UTEP was naturally a part of regional conferences for a long, long time. The Border Conference in the old days with schools like Arizona, Texas Tech, NMSU and others. Then indy for a while and on to the WAC for over 30 years with Arizona, Arizona St, UNM, Utah, BYU, Wyoming, CSU. So it really is hard to identify with southeastern schools imho. I think the fan base got hyped up when UTEP was in C-USA with SMU and Houston and Rice. Those were former SWC schools and it felt like a positive move since the WAC was obviously going down hill.
Also, it was a real low point to realize UTEP was being left behind when the MWC formed. A lot of that has to do with the state of facilities at the time and a long period of an administration that didn't stress football. Big mistake that I believe they are trying, and have been trying, to overcome.

This game will be a very close one. The Army game was an exception to the rule.

Lord I hope the Army game was an aberration. If not it will be yet another long season in EP.

Army really did the right thing in hiring Monken. His success with the option at Ga Southern and now at Army shows what can be done with the right system in place. I don't think USM will need it though since they seem to have a well balanced offense, good enough to cover the spread of 10 points in this game, imo.

Thanks for your explanation! What you said makes sense. I feel the same way on many points about USM and our situation as well.

Stopped in El Paso on many occasions during my "National Lampoon Vacations" out west, usually heading to, or coming from, Big Bend Nat'l Park, Carlsbad Caverns, all parts of New Mexico and all parts of Arizona. The campus sits on a beautiful location, and the earth-tone buildings give it a kind of Shangri-La experience.
Don't go across the border anymore, even though I used to get my eye contacts and Ibuprofen dirt cheap...

A lot of my friends and coworkers have returned to frequenting Ciudad Juarez. For Vets, Dentists, and Mechanics among other things. Even at the height of the madness, the violence was very specific and pinpoint. Even if the actual numbers and statistics were staggering and jaw dropping. Truth be told, I'd sooner walk around Juarez at night than Chicago or Baltimore. Seriously.
