Dodd/CBS: Big 12 -- Add BYU & Houston, or you have some explaining to do
Quote:BYU is clearly the best football option with a brand, a budget and a history (1984 national championship). Houston has the endorsement of the state governor and lieutenant governor, as well as the University of Texas president and chancellor.
We may look back on Saturday as the day the Cougars both played their way into the Big 12 and the College Football Playoff. It wasn't just the result against Oklahoma, it was the eventual dismantling of the Sooners in front of a sold-out crowd.
At several positions, the Cougars had better athletes. Blue-chip defensive tackle Ed Oliver is the first five-star prospect to ever sign with a Group of Five school.
Big 12 recruiting is slipping in Texas. The Oliver signing would suggest it certainly isn't slipping in Houston. The TV rating for the OU game was 50 percent higher than the highest-rated game in Houston market last season (Alabama-Texas A&M). It was 78 percent higher than the highest Big 12 game (Oklahoma-Texas).

It's a shame Dodd is a blithering idiot...

"In its last round of expansion, the Big 12 already made the dubious choice of West Virginia over Louisville."
The Mountaineers still taking hits five years later!

I'm sure the Dude of West Virginia would disagree with the Dud of cbssports.com on that one....

Oliver's older brother is currently on Houston's roster. I feel like that is something that should be stated.
Additionally, I think the only thing the Big 12 should be worried about is bringing in the best athletic departments possible that improve the conference for the next round of negotiations. If that is BYU and Houston so be it. BYU and Cincy lets roll.
Big 12 presidents are not going to limit a team from joining because schools are scared. It is going to be because they are not one of the two best candidates.

They're jerking everyone around.
Mid October they'll come back with "no one candidate could get the 8 votes so it's tabeled until the spring meeting"

Totally agree. I think they will decide what to do during this offseason, but have to play one season with 10 teams and the championship game.
I honestly think the big 12 should wait for the season to play out anyway. If the big 12 gets another team in the playoff this year are they really in that bad of position? That would be a team in the playoff 2/3 years including the two most recent.

If they go to 14, the best adds should be UConn and Cincinnati in the east and BYU and Colorado State in the west. Four new tv markets in Denver, Salt Lake City/Mormons, Cincinnati and Hartford. No market saturation and competition with existing members and opens new recruiting access to football talent rich Ohio.

If they go 4 it should be UConn, Houston, Cincinnati and BYU...Bridge to WVU while shoring up Texas in Houston/Cincinnati & adding National Brands in BYU Football and UConn Men and Women Basketball

And your point is?....... his HS coach is also on our staff but you and I know neither is a given to secure a player.
It's always a case by case basis and if Ed didn't like what he saw he could have still played in state somewhere else.

If that's the way it works then Jackson Jeffcoat should have picked the Houston hat when we had his Dad on staff. Of course, with his sister at OU, they probably thought they were going to get him.
Texas Tech fans are still p.o.'d that Kendal Briles didn't sign with them when Art was their running back coach.
We certainly don't hear how the young Shipleys and McCoys chose UT because of their older siblings.

If they go 4, BYU, UH and Cincinnati have to be 3 of the 4. I would bet on UConn being #4, but if I were making the decision, I would go with somebody better geographically-Colorado St. or Tulane.

It's just an opinion piece. I doubt the Big 12 will pass on Cincinnati out of fear of "having some explaining to do" to Dennis Dodd.

I really think it's tough to separate UH, Cincy and BYU. All have their plusses and minuses. If the league only goes to 12, someone with a good argument will be excluded.

Take all three and UConn.
Just what I think makes sense, but we shall see how this plays out over the next month or more.

RE: Dodd/CBS: Big 12 -- Add BYU & Houston, or you have some explaining to do
The playoff committee have blasted the Big 12 in scheduling cupcake teams which includes SMU, Rice, Tulane, UConn and Colorado State. They need to add some strong football teams to boast their image for the playoff committee.
Take 3 west and take 3 east to offset, and don't leave islands which Dennis Dodd is doing.
BYU/Boise State as a pair.
Boise State is already have rivalry games with BYU, TCU and Oklahoma, and adding Colorado State would make 4. Colorado State in for academics, and Boise State for their strong football to keep the Big 12 active in the playoff pictures.
Houston and Cincinnati to the east. I would leave UConn out. They would be on an island by themselves unlike BYU and Boise State as close as those two are. Memphis, East Carolina or Old Dominion are better choices. They would not be on an island since they would be neighboring states except for Memphis who would be close to Iowa State and Houston.
