Not sure we can still be considered a triple option team anymore.

I believe that shutout is an example of a new edge the defense has and I wouldn't be surprised, much like last year, to see South Alabama fall back to Earth after week 1.

SSU:
114 yards total offense
2.47 YPP

That's in our top 10 defensive efforts ever.

#9 is 2015 South Alabama.

We've matched up well with USA so far in conference play. I don't expect that to change that much. We also have much more aggressive line play. Our big guys in Ellison and Sapp are still big, but carrying their weight better and seem to be able to move much easier. They were getting a bit too big and slow under Fritz's staff.

Our secondary is young and inexperienced, but our front 7 has the potential to make the job very easy for them moving forward. It should be a very interesting game this weekend.

We played poorly week 1 and 2 last year. We never really got better, outside of SDSU in week 3. This is a different team. More talent, more depth, more leadership (the most important change) and better coaches on defense. We are much better than mid season last year.

This game will be interesting to watch. I see South Alabama as a team that has made steps for improvement on offence, and has a decent defense. However, unless they are able to stop the run, I don't really see how it will be competitive. Our offense will score points, and our defense held savannah state to about 100 yards of total offense. Even with an fcs team that is pretty impressive. When we played them in 2014, they were able to manage about 300 yards of total offense on us. And though we didn't score as many points, we had our 3rd string quarter back, and 5th string running back in a majority of the second half. We could have easily scored many more if we had Ellison and Upshaw playing. I am going to make a prediction that the score next week will be 35-17 in our favor.

That's not saying much. Savannah might as well be a D2 school.

Until South Alabama is able to prove to stop the triple option...I believe our defense has never held a Triple Option team under 30 points. That includes Cal-Poly, Navy, and Georgia Southern. I think in our first year of football Army Prep ran the TO but cant remember.

Besides improved passing, I saw more to be concerned about than positive Saturday. It didn't look like there was a mesh as opposed to straight dives and speed options outside. A lot of rushing yards came in mop up time. Either Savannah State is much improved (which is possible having a proven winner as Head Coach) or our offense has taken about 3 steps backwards. The new staff Tweets out Bible verses which is nice, but on the field there should be no mercy between first tick and last tick.

We weren't running our offense. There was basically no pre-snap motion in almost all of the plays and I don't think any of the running back carries were zone read as you said.

I feel pretty sure we won't see Favian Upshaw sprint to the perimeter with only a receiver to block for him and no pitch man. I'm also pretty sure we won't see the play where Kevin Ellison takes the snap in an empty backfield and then immediately runs straight at the defense.

I think the new coaching staff at SSU has improved their play and we looked stiff on offense.

After witnessing our transformation between game 1 and game 2 last season, I put little to no stock in first game performances (good or bad).

Well, we certainly aren't the type of triple option team we used to be, and it remains to be seen about this year ... but in 2014 we only scored 28 so yes, your defense has held a TO team under 30 if you count us in the mix.

I was there in 2014, and 2 things kept us in that game ... our defense and Brandon Bridge throwing the ball when he could have glided for a couple of easy first downs running the ball.

Should be a good game in Mobile.

Even though USA's DL isn't overpowering, their strong back seven will help against perimeter runs as well as the Eagles' new-fangled passing attack. Can they get a few stops to give the offense a chance? That's the question.

Didn't mean journalize you. Just responded to the original post before I read responses. Similar theme, less boning.

No, you guys are pretty much the only group of fans that seem to really have it in for us for some reason I haven't figured out yet. Even though we troll and try to yank the chains of State fans a lot here they won't be rooting as hard against us.

I think read on the Savannah State/GaSo game thread that the Eagles had seven players out for disciplinary reasons that will back for this game. Is that right?

Yes.

Two of our freshmen corners (both on the two-deep, one was supposed to start), two of our top defensive ends, our #2 short-yardage-situation back, a fourth-string running back that doesn't play much, and the #4 or so linebacker on the team.

I don't think they've learned their lesson yet. One more game should do it.

This game should be interesting because first of all SA is high and confident. Confidence is a huge thing in football. Plus they throw and catch good and that one receiver is a baller. GS may still have some questions although talented and speedy. Defense looks good but our young secondary may be tested by these guys. We will see how much pressure we can put on the Q. OL for GS is banged up some and have had some injuries. To me this game may be a close hard fought game. Miss st may not be that great this year but they have talent and are well coached. Congrats to USA for a good win.
