Illini still struggling to sell tix
I have been on their email since last NIU game there.

4 tix, $20 in concession credit for $49!

Vs. a P5 team, ranked 15 last year that had a shot at playoff!!!

Guess there is the have's and the have not's.

Lets not throw stones when...

But this is the new norm. College football hasn't gotten less popular all of a sudden, the tv experience is just too good.

They were smart when the renovated to take out seat capacity ILO premium boxes.

If the Big 12 pipe dream ever happened I would caution the stadium expansion to focus on the right sized model. 35k with more premium seating options.

Baylor had it right (stadium expansion not how they Run a program!)

To further prove the point, I just go served up a banner ad for $35 tix...for Bama! The struggle to sell tix is real.

When you can sit on your couch on a saturday and watch every game, all day long, it's tough to get people and alumni out to your stadium unless you live within 20-30 minutes.

Let's take it one step further.... You can sit on the toilet and watch whatever game you want on your phone.

When you can now do anything with you phone - including having sex with it - college football is a most boring alternative. Unless, of course, you want to have sex with your phone at the game.

Could be an interesting marketing campaign

that's very true but there is a large element that is missing from that home experience. The game day atmosphere at a college game can be unmatched, the tailgating experience, the connection with friends and family, the enjoyment of being outdoors in those waning days of summer and the breath taking beauty of fall. That's why it is important to invite a new person to a game and let them experience this. they may want to come back.

I totally agree.

I think networks and moreover ESPN contributes to this when 90% of coverage is the same 15 teams. Top ten and some of the big boys who likely are not living up to expectations.

People come to identify with those programs. Then there becomes local coverage, location, time, opponent, kids and other commitments. All been discussed. But with a new coach, CU being 100+ miles from pro sports, it shows what a mess it is. And yes, mirrors many other programs, including NIU, in getting folks to come out.

Give Lovie Smith a couple of years. He will turn the program around then season ticket Holders will grow. He is the biggest name to come to Illinois ever.

Keep in mind that Memorial Stadium holds three times as many people as Huskie Stadium. If the Illini were to leave the B1G, they would jump ahead of NIU in the line to join the Big 12, just because of the size of their fan base.

Not any more.

They went 70k TO 60 K, and I think that includes suites and pseudo clubs.

Stand may have been outdated but they destroyed any atmosphere they had. Band and some students in fare less than capacity endzone, away from main stands and the brick wall eyesore on the west. Just a piecemealed piece of crap north and west sides. Ron Zook's vision before he was gone.

And the highest paid in the entire state! When they hired him he became the highest paid public employee in Illinois.

That's a steal for Illinois. The average HC salary in the B1G last year was around 3.25MM (not including Illinois). Lovie is making an average of 3.5MM over the next 6 years.

I'd rather that "honor" go to Lovie Smith than Tim Beckman, though. Beckman was also the highest paid state employee when he was at Illinois.

The problem with U of I is much more then the coaching. They have structural issues at every level of management above Lovie. The coach can only do so much when there is dysfunction of management leading to the alienation of the alumni and fan base.

They've filled most of those roles with new people (I think they still need a provost IIRC), and the fanbase and alums are pretty happy so far with the new AD. It's early, of course, but he's been much more engaging with the fans and hiring Lovie made a good first impression.

Whether or not new people helps with the administrative dysfunction, I guess we'll find out.

The highest paid public employees in most states are the football or basketball coaches.

Should we discuss the state pensions some of the former coaches are receiving? Lou Henson?

Guess there is the have's and the have not's.

Geez. How cheap are their prices for the WMU game this season there? As it is, that's cheaper than a WMU home game.

4 tickets, $50 concession credit for $29? :)
