Depends on your definition of success. It won't be a P5 athletic program, but it can identify it's strengths, build upon them, and be a nationally recognized program on some scale like it once was on the football field.

I bought into the "more with less" theory for a while, contributed to it, saw USM have success above it's means. I've also seen tremendous waste, mismanagement, and disastrous leadership that's driven the athletic program into SUNWACUSA and the academic side into near tier 4 status. I think it can be better on both accounts with the right approach and leadership / direction, but I've yet to see enough to believe it will. It has a tremendous challenge to overcome the powers that immediately preceded the current regime's decisions that are and will effect what's happening now.

But it's easier to blame Ole Miss, Sweet Peppers, Jimmy Buffett, the IHL, SEC Refs, Britt Banowski, ISIS, USF, NASA, and anyone / thing else that doesn't say TTT or Go Eagles.

Well BDR, you gotta admit OP hasn't been much of an ally (UVA was one of the main reasons Va Tech was admitted to the ACC)...but, then again, honestly, why should they wanna help?

For many years my friends and I tried to (nicely) challenge the powers BDR talks about....and help USM take a stronger, more progressive (not THAT kinda progressive, rock 04-cheers) stance...yet when you do that you are considered interlopers or outcasts or yes, someone who doesn't say TTT correctly, and you are ostracized (That is soooo Mississippi...kinda like the slogan, "Only Positive Mississippi spoken here"..only change it to: "Only Positive Southern Miss spoken here" 03-banghead).

Gotta admit I kinda gave it up..

This blind following of anyone THEY hire out there in the athletic dept. is astounding....and after hiring so many officials with the personality of Atilla the Hun, you woulda thought we woulda learned.

I agree with what you are saying, I would only ask if Walmart was hiring Target managers how much of a threat would Target be to Walmart. Good ole Mississippi has been run by the good ole boys forever. If you don't understand that keeping certain people and institutions favored has been MO forever, then you probably do look at sweet peppers as the strawman keeping us on our backs.

I'd say very few of us on here would be considered part of the good ol' boy network, regardless our political backgrounds, because most of those folks are more than satisfied with the status quo.

If some of you only knew how many people work at USM who are secret OP/MSUcks fans, despise USM, bite the hand that literally feeds them...but are treated like royalty because they wisely expouse the TTT mantra, while secretely hoping USM stays right where it is...

Goldstandard, mea culpa.
I vote for BDR. or LES. Both good eggs.
And I think it was Pogo, not Peanuts, on the quote. But I never read Peanuts.

The same reason Stinkfist was nominated and not on the ballot. I like Nug and Stink, but they're not the moderator type. You know that.

Believe me, I go back a ways. Played jr high school ball with JJ Stewart. I also know that a very large portion of the reason USM is in the position it is today is because of ole miss. The decision to quit playing us was a killer to our momentum back then. Done intentionally and with malice and it worked. MSU followed (because that is what they do) and the path was laid to irrelevance in our state. We went from a near equal in our state to just another JSU overnight.
For this I will forever hold a grudge against TSUN.
Could the administration have done better? Sure. But it was written on the wall from that point on, from the stacked college board on down, this state will not allow a successful USM athletic program.

Disastrous hires in the last 20 years at four key positions at different times (once each at football, basketball and president and twice at AD) did more than anything OM or MSU ever could do to hurt us. It's almost criminal how our "leadership" consistently failed us in the last 20 years, both academically and athletically. Put the blame in the right place and do something about it. Bennett and McGillis were handed a big steaming pile of TTT. And we are not out of the woods yet.

Blame OM all you want. They only wish they could hurt like we were hurt by our own efforts.

Nothing has hurt us more than the legislature of this state. I have observed it all my life. Every time that this little teachers college experienced any kind of success, weather it be on the athletic fields or in the classrooms that threatened Ole Miss action was taken. Computer engineering taken from us,Nursing school lead taken from us,a complete library of law books that would have been donated to us not allowed.Salting down of our accounting and business schools which at one time was one of the hottest schools in the nation, refusing us a school of pharmacy. This is just n my lifetime.if you don't understand that State and Ole Miss have us positioned exactly where they want us,then you do not understand the political dynamics of this state. The Delta Council lives on.

You left out some stuff. We had several news personalities hit the national stage and the programs were completely shut down. The accounting program had the most extensive collection of tax research materials in the southeast not to mention were claiming the gold medal on the cpa exam 8 out of 10 exams when the "leadership" position was taken away.
When Mississippi passed the open meetings law Bobby chain had just rotated off the ihl admitted to the local press those and other programs were taken away just to keep us from having them.
We are not allowed to start certain programs while state has duplicated the construction technology and is trying to start nursing in Meridian.

Its also funny that spending state money for auxiliaries including athletics wasn't a problem before conference revenue sharing became large in the 90's.
Once they got their welfare checks started they worked to shut off ours.

Our administration hasn't been what we all would hope but our real enemies are north of us.

If either of those bastards played the Taliban i would wear a towel on my head for a week.

At least they're not offering it in Starkville. What's the current deal with nursing at OM and MSU? 2 years in Oxford/Starkville then 2 years in Jackson?

As for the IHL board, it's not going anywhere. I don't what the deal was in the 70s and 80s but we have pretty decent represenation at the moment. Problem is we will have only 1 USM rep on the board by 2018. Bryant will replace the 2 USM reps that will cycle out in 2 years and I am hopeful he will choose USM grads. Since the 2 have to be from the Second (South) Supreme Court district, there's a decent chance they will be. However, out of his 7 appointees, only 1 has USM ties.

I can confirm this (think I mentioned this a few weeks ago on EP). Saw photos of him on Spaceboard at move in day at Oxford last week. Wearing red/blue.

I can confirm this (think I mentioned this a few weeks ago on EP). Saw photos of him on Spaceboard at move in day at Oxford last week. Wearing red/blue.

Did the Delta Council kidnap her to Oxford?

Well i have always believed that a 18 year old kid isnt mature enough to make the decision of what is best for their future. After rasing 2 i believe that more than ever.
Im just thankful that the one of mine who was dead set on going to oxford went to a sr party wearing a om shirt. The host asked him a question. "Son, im out of toilet paper, can i use your shirt to wipe my ass?"

That one never said another word about going there. Has a bs from usm and will graduate with a Doctor of nursing practice in Anesthesia in December.

If they are making their mind up because of academics and its a must that is one thing. But my dr and my dentist are Southern miss grads. I see more and more kids going to dental school and med school from here. It is kids wanting to be cool and parents, many of whom are our alum pat them on the head and say its ok.

That and a flame 3 feet off the ground are things that burn my ass up.
