I like Houston and I honestly hooe you guys get into the Big 12,but on merits like fan base s8ze, football winning percentage and support of region there are schools more deserving than Houstion. So be careful about wanting a meritocracy for a Big 12 invite just, enjoy whatever gets you out of G5 hell.
Oh I don't know, I could cite our winning percentage in the past decade which is among the best in the country, hundreds of millions worth of completed or in progress facilities upgrades, a couple of ranked finishes including a top 10 finish, 23k (and still growing) season ticket holders, location in the soon to be third biggest city in the country to name just a few.
I never said we were the most deserving candidate. I merely stated that, political dealing aside, we're a deserving candidate on our own.
I completely agree with that. Your location is what is complicating things.
I'm not sure if that's true. Per last year's TV ratings, Houston is currently at risk of becoming a SEC/UH town. If the PAC were to jump up and grab us, God help the Big 12's chances of ever holding a significant presence here.
I also don't buy the over-saturation argument. There are more people in Texas than Ohio, Tennessee, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Idaho combined. That's not to say that all 4 (if it's 4) additions should come from Texas, but 1 more isn't going to hurt.

It was a smart move for them. Im for using whatever we have at our disposal to get in. That said, giving our blessing to a UT-Houston is likely not a good long term move---though it would be years before it could negatively affect us in any significant way. On the other hand, if the agreement is to allow more of a UTSA type school, then that wouldn't affect UH too much as those two schools wouldn't really be chasing the same students UH is after.
Reminds of Va Tech and the ACC. It was VA political pressure that got them in. I see no reason for Houston not use every advantage they have to get in the Big 12. If ND had ever decides to join the ACC, I would have liked to seen Houston as the 16th ACC team. Good luck to all the G5 trying to move up. This is probably the last train to Clarksville. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcXpKiY2MXE
lol...BTW---I wasn't very old back then, but I had no idea until a few years ago that the "Last Train to Clarksville" was designed to be an anti-war song (its supposed to the words of a soldier leaving for duty). The Monkees were heavily stage managed by the studio and apparently that's about as edgy as the studio would allow the Monkees to be back then. Any anti-war sentiment they wanted to express had to be very hidden and vague---so that was about as far as they could go.

Yep, that's the only reason. We bring nothing merit-based, whatsoever.

Finally, we have no history with the teams in the Big 12 and if we did, their beating us means nothing to their fans.

I'm not saying that we *deserve* it any more than anyone else, as I think that all the candidates can make their own strong arguments, but to say that UT's backing of us is the only reason is ridiculous.
I'm not saying UH doesn't deserve an invite, just that Texas did a complete 180 degree flip on the subject. Before the announcement of purchasing those 300 acres in Houston, Texas was against inviting Houston in. The ACC Network announcement may have been the impetus for the Big 12 changing their position on expansion, but I'm sure the UT@Houston campus was what turned Texas.
If we can help them help us, while being one of, if not the clear #1 choice based on merit, I don't see the problem. Perhaps it will prove to be a rare occasion in politics where pride is set aside, and compromise is reached to allow everyone to get what they want.
True, as long as it doesn't turn into a "me first" situation, like it was with VaTech leapfrogging BC to get into the ACC. That whole time in early Big East realignment was shady asf.

Also, I'm so over the location argument. If we were three hours east across the LA border everyone would assume we were an automatic bid. It's ridiculous. Texas is frickin huge. If North Carolina can happily support 4 P5 programs in the ACC, Texas should be able to manage 5 in the B12 without breaking a sweat.

Yep, let's just put it this way:
Houston, LA
Lubbock, NM
Fort Worth, OK

Budget wise it's a no brainer given the 2-3 hour bus rides for some plus the 2 airport hubs.

As long as Wake Forest is P5, any argument about getting invited based on "merits" is invalid.

I'm not talking about TV or over-saturation in that sense. I'm talking about being another school in the state of Texas, with 6 non-Texas schools, several of which aren't keen on adding a 5th Texas school.

Yup. Without some horse trading there is likely to be 3 or more "no" votes for Houston. Of course, that's probably true for a number of candidates at this point.

Depends on how you look at it. Maybe the Texas President doesn't want Houston, but can't play his cards. So, he agrees to say that Houston would be a good addition knowing that other schools will vote to keep them out. Their hands would be clean. You can't take anything for face value.

Texas wouldn't do that as it would make them look weak due to their word being worthless. Not to mention Texas has the power to get 2 Texas schools to vote no on any candidate they don't approve of. So it doesn't matter what non Texas schools want. Basically either the non Texas schools vote yes on uh or the 3 Texas schools vote no and expansion doesn't happen.

The Houston vote will be first I assure u. That vote will set the tone. Texas will tow the line because their brass reports to the Lt. Governor.

Well, that is certainly the theory. We'll know before long. If that doesn't happen, it will definitely make Texas look weak. If it does happen, it will make everybody else look weak, and look like more of the same.

You're right, it's a big conspiracy between Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, the UT president and chancellor, the Texas Tech president, the Houston mayor, TCU's football and baseball coaches, and an assortment of TX state senators.

Texas wont have to leave they will just vote no on any team that isn't uh along with 2 other texas schools. Effectively blocking expansion until the non texas teams play ball. Texas can afford not to expand the non texas schools, not so much. Your right they wont leave over Houston but they wouldn't hurt their reputation by supporting Houston either unless they know Houston will get in.

I'm not digging, it's politics. Do you really think that Texas or the other Texas schools want Houston? No,,,,why would they want the threat. Houston is on an incredible roll, TT, Baylor, etc want no part of the Coogs. That being said, could you imagine the backlash if word got out that the President of UT didn't want Houston? Of course they have to say that they want them. C'mon, you know that.
Hey, I may be 100% wrong, no one knows what's going on behind closed doors. Maybe the reporters are on the exact truth, but that rarely happens.
