Is there a 'dining hall' in the new building? Maybe if we open up and improve the concessions, or invite food trucks? I think it would be fitting to name something in his honor.

No, there is not going to be a dining hall in the new facility. There's a "nutrition" area in the weight room but that I think is meant for protein shakes and post-workout snacks.

The lack of an athletic dining area is probably one of our biggest weaknesses in terms of student-athlete facilities now (once the back of Tudor is complete). H&D does meals for the football team in the R Room three nights a week, and in general, the serveries put out a decent product, but when other schools have athlete-exclusive areas, it puts us at a disadvantage.

I don't mean to muck up this thread though, so if a mod wants to move this comment to the EZF thread, that'd be great!

The not having athlete-exclusive dining areas is a feature, not a bug. Integration of athletics with the rest of the student body is a good thing, in terms of trying to build greater support.

There was enough thinking of athletes as "those people" when I was there without them having exclusive areas. No reason to make it worse, if we want students to show up.

I wasn't implying that it would be the daily dinner for athletes, but there are certainly times when food would be served... often not to the athletes.

My comments were about finding a way to honor Frankie B...

Good food, friends, fun and Rice is what that man was all about.

Oh, definitely with you on finding a way to honor Frankie B. Wasn't really commenting on your end at all, so much as responding to ExcitedOwl's response.

Concrete now being poured on bottom of ramp to field, just out of frame on the left.

Some kind of fence poles going up along the edge of the concrete apron.

It appears that we will not be able to walk across at the north end. They are putting up a fence that will separate the new facility from HRS. We no longer have an oval. We have a horseshoe.

I bet there will be an open gate that lets you walk across that front portion of the EZF.

Exclamation RE: EZF Construction Thread
Thought this might be relevant here. Several Bailiff and Karrlgaard quotes along with Rice references in the linked article. I'm glad we're getting the EZF and hope we continue to fully renovate HRS in the future. But by itself, the EZF might not be enough to turn our football team into a consistent winner. Other changes will still need to be made:

EDITOR’S NOTE: North Texas will reach the five-year anniversary of its first game at Apogee Stadium this fall. Over the next three days, the Denton Record-Chronicle will examine the state of UNT’s program as it reaches a milestone that coincides with a critical point in program history. Today’s story focuses on the facilities arms race among UNT and the schools it competes with in the region.

Optimism about North Texas’ athletic program reached new heights on a warm summer afternoon in 2011 when the school announced a naming rights deal for its brand-new football stadium.

Louisiana Tech, Rice and Houston are among the schools that have responded with major facility upgrades since UNT opened Apogee, which hasn’t made the impact that school officials and fans hoped it might.

As this will now be the primary path between the locker and training rooms and the field, I could see them closing it so that players aren't bouncing off fans when trying to get treatment, if they have to go inside.

The Gator carts have to be able to negotiate that ramp, too...

There will not be a path in front of the Patterson center open to the public on game days.

"The horseshoe" sounds much more badass than "the oval," even if the former already is taken by Ohio State!

Other schools have to compete with the best facilities because they often have little else to 'sell' to their recruits. We have an educational experience and opportunity that isn't even in the same zip code as theirs to offer. Because athletes spend so much time at the stadium and many DO hope they have a shot at the NFL, we can't be so far behind that they question the ability to 'get there from here'... but given the number of recent players to get there WITHOUT the facilities, AND what is at least competitive facilities, we should be good for a while (as long as we maintain it and stay current with technology changes).

Looking at it physically over the weekend, the path did not look wide enough for the public to use.

It'll suck if there isn't. We've always been able to walk around the stadium. They should have thought about that. I also feel like the EZF should be open so people can see it for themselves. At least the front weight room should be open. Why keep people out? It's something that needs to be shown off.

No way should people be walking through the weight room... They can look through the window as they walk in front of it which previous posters have just confirmed will be allowed on gameday. We should be showing it off to recruits (which I'm 100% sure we do) and donors but that's it. I bet you can't find me a single program in the county that lets fans wander through its team facility.

Lets get real. I'm not talking about letting people "wander" through the facility, but rather stand behind a cordoned-off area where they can take a look at things from the inside. Have a security guard stationed there. How hard could that be? What would be the harm? Don't we want people to see it?

Oops my bad. I read excitedowl as "there will be a path". I still don't think people should be able to walk through the weight room.

I think we'd much rather have them watch the game than watch an empty weight room.

The fact of the building alone should be fine for most of the public. Weight rooms aren't for us, they're for the team (and recruits).

That's your reasoning, that weight rooms are for the team and not fans? Gimme a break. Rice has needed this facility for thirty years, now we don't want people to see it? Show it off! Give tours. Open it up and invite anyone who bought a ticket to see it. I think it would be a terrible gesture to everyone in attendance if the facility isn't accessible, especially after so much excitement and anticipation surrounding it's opening. The Baylor game isn't just about upsetting a big P5 member, it's about showcasing the EZF. You can't do that if it's locked up.

Any facility is busy before/during/after a game... You've got guys dressing in the locker room, stretching in the weight room, getting taped and treated in the training room, coaches finalizing things in meeting rooms, etc... The last thing any team needs is curious guests poking around.

No, my reasoning is that if you paid for a ticket to a football game, you should watch the football game, not an empty weight room.

If there's more interest in an empty weight room that you'll likely be able to see in a photo spread online at some point in the next two months than there is in the actual football game, that's a problem.

Tours, yes. Sure. Schedule them appropriately. Open during the games, no.
