PFT: Chargers file 110,786 signatures supporting stadium ballot initiative
“Most signature gathering efforts of this kind take six full months. We had just six weeks to complete our work,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. “The fact that we were able to collect more than 110,000 signatures in that short period of time demonstrates tremendous support in our community for a new, combined stadium-convention center expansion downtown.”
The signatures still need to be vetted and, as the San Diego Union-Tribune reported this week, uncertainty remains about whether the ballot measure will pass with a simple majority or if the team needs two-thirds of the vote. The two remaining candidates in the race for City Attorney both said they expect the plan will need two-thirds of the vote to pass when it comes up later this year.

Translation: Get ready to see the Chargers restart negotiations with the Rams. With even less leverage.

Yeah, if everyone seems to agree that 2/3 is required, that means the Chargers' entire initiative campaign is a waste of time.
Some people have suspected that the Chargers were playing things out in SD only because they want to keep playing in SD until KroenkeWorld opens, and don't want to be known as a lame duck in SD for three full seasons. We don't know if that's their motivation, but pursuing an initiative that needs a 2/3 yes vote but has zero chance of getting 2/3 does support that suspicion.

The Chargers already have a deal with the Rams negotiated and agreed to. They took care of that early in 2016.

I hope they go for it anyway, even needing 2/3rds, and cram it down the anti-spending crowd's throats!

Why should the taxpayers be required to fund toy boxes for a cartel of billionaires?

It wouldn't be. No more than US Bank stadium in Mpls will be exclusively used for Vikings games. Don't be so naive.
And I don't care if it doesn't improve the local economy. It's called "our city has nice things". If you want them, then you gotta pay for em.

San Diego has enough nice things. No need for them to have to buy something.
I used to live in MN and am a HUGE Vikings fan. I was actually rooting for the team to move instead of having the city/state pay for a new stadium.

Quote:The San Diego Chargers have obtained enough valid signatures to qualify their new stadium proposal for the Nov. 8 election, the San Diego City Clerk confirmed Saturday.
Quote:In March, a state appellate court issued a ruling in a separate case that indicated citizens’ initiatives like this only required a simple majority of more than 50%, not two-thirds of voters as required when a tax hike is proposed by a government agency.
But then the state Supreme Court took up the case last month, effectively wiping out the appellate court ruling until the Supreme Court makes its decision. The Supreme Court conceivably could lower the threshold to a simple majority — or not.
The problem for the team is that such a decision might not come for many months, probably well after the election and after Jan. 15, when the Chargers are due to make a call on whether to join the Rams in Los Angeles.
San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said he would ask the Supreme Court to expedite the decision for the benefit of San Diego voters and even take jurisdiction of the matter to help settle it.
Chargers should be in San Diego. City deserves a new stadium, downtown. Raiders should move to LV.
I hope the state Supreme Court rules that 50% is all that's needed, right before the vote. Give the anti-spending crowd the least possible time to file an appeal. They won't be able to stop the vote, and it will pass with 5x% approval.
Once the shovels hit the dirt, there's nothing they can do. Except let the river of tears flow.
