Exclamation Nice Wolken article on Norvell
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nca.../85345288/

...[T]he truth is, Memphis hasn’t had a coach like Norvell, someone who has embraced the city so fully for its unique flavor, in a long time. Even John Calipari, for as much as he won in basketball, constantly complained about the fan base (he called them “Miserables”) and the train tracks running through campus. Fuente was more of a head-down type. Basketball coach Josh Pastner, who replaced Calipari, never got it, which is part of the reason his popularity and his results sunk as his tenure went on before taking the Georgia Tech job this year...

I've seen coach Norvell out a lot in the city. Always seems to be approachable and genuinely seems to like it here. I really hope he has success.

Calipari and West were correct about the fans...way too many "I'm a fan of whatever SEC football team is winning, and whenever Tiger hoops are good" types.

Yeah. He and Fizz are definitely a breath of fresh air. Hopefully it will continue to game play.

God forbid we try and welcome in anybody who wants to pay money on tickets to see Memphis play, regardless if they pull for another school as well. If we ever have aspirations to be one of the big boys, we need every fan we can get.

that's capitalism...if the most hard core bama fans wants Tiger football tickets, cool, buy em...but that doesn't make Cal or Tommy any less correct.

I think we have a bunch of Memphis fans both basketball and football. But just like any sport everyone loves a winner.

Compared to what other fan bases?

One thing I said right after he was hired was that aside from the job itself, he really seemed to be genuinely excited about being in the city of Memphis, talking about coming to MusicFest when he was in college, etc.

I feel like he's someone who "gets" Memphis...hopefully the product on the field will be good enough to keep him here for a while.

this.

It is shocking to me that people still drag out the tired line about Memphis having bad fans. The truth is in fact the opposite. But hey, they get to throw out those cute sec football Memphis basketball lines that they do not realize are old and worn out. They kind of remind me of our last basketball coach and are way closer to miserable than the boogie man they created in their tin foil hat wearing little heads.

no idea as I only root for one team...you'd have to ask the miserables about other fan bases.
