I think only our leaders and top boosters know if we've had serious discussions with other conferences (PAC, ACC, B1G, SEC). Possibly we have and we've relayed their interest to the Big12 which is why we might be getting some late love from the UT media right now.

I'd have to say the most laughable reason I've seen for keeping us out of the Big 12 is ....Recruiting..lol

The question I have is ...what happens if another power conference picks us up? We will still be able to lure Texas area recruits to UH bc we are a in a power conference...the difference is that those recruits will now be members of the PAC, ACC, etc. and NOT the Big 12. We can literally take top recruits from the BIg 12's back yard and deliver them to the PAC,etc....this is exactly what Texas A&M has done for the SEC.
But the PAC isn't taking Houston anyway so it doesn't matter. The PAC needs schools with fans who hop in their RV's and travel to their games. Houston won't provide that. Texas and OU can. Oh, that's right the PAC publicly denied OU in 2012. If they did that to OU I guess that means they'd take Houston? Long shot.
Cheers!

I thought the Pac almost landed a grand-slam with the Texahoma deal (UT, TTU, OK & OSU) back in 2010-11?? Only for UT to burn that bridge with the announcement of their LHN.

Also, you cannot predict what Houston can or cannot do. Many predicted the Peach Bowl would not sell out from Houston's side. Well it was. Only time will tell what the fanbase will do once in a P5 conference.

Are you sure...you may want to check out how many UH people traveled last year and will travel next season. I know a huge group is making the trip up to Maryland to watch the Coogs play Navy.

I'd mention the large number of Coogs that traveled to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl (I was one of them) but that was expected.

Keep an eye out for Coogs on the road...you might be surprised.

UH is fine for the time being, but Houston, or any American school investing heavily in athletics will flop if they don't get at least close to positive cash flow in athletics. We are subsidizing the hell out of our football team and it's not sustainable.

Yes, a heavily subsidized budget of low to mid 40's is very bad. The fans need to pick up the slack. Houston has a shot at the Big 12 with sell outs this year and bringing a ton of fans to the away games. I know it's hard to pack your RV and head to "conference" games in Connecticut, Philly, Greenville and Maryland, Orlando and Tampa but that's what needs to happen for the Coogs to move up. When Iowa plays Minnesota and Illinois etc they bring over 20,000 fans with them. I'm not talking about when Iow goes to the Peach Bowl. I'm talking about over 20k traveling fans for Minny-fricken-sota.
Cheers!

I'm betting if the Big 12 issued an invitation to Houston, your administrators would accept just as fast as they could jump across the table, or through the phone line, to shake hands.

I get the general logic of being "sustainable" but I've been a Coog for the last 34 years when I enrolled in 1982, and even back then the entire athletic program was subsidized and there would be articles in the paper saying how it's not sustainable and that something has to give.

Yet, here we are in 2016 and the program is still in the red, yet it's still here.

The athletics programs aren't going away.

Let's hope so, cause some UT fans feel Red doesn't have as much sway as he used to.

Surely the program was self sustaining when it was in the equivalent of a P5 conference in the SWC. You guys were winning big, playing big name programs, had nationally recognized coaches, playing in large home venues within a conference that was guaranteed a New Year's day bowl game when there were only 4 of them.

Any other program here would drool over such a windfall as that.

I realize that when Lewis/Yeoman left, the last few years in the SWC were pretty dry for the Cougars and fans didn't have the same reasons for attending, but surely here were years of profitable athletics given the near perfect environment Cougar fans had.

UH fans get their wish -- Big 12 dreams dominate the Chronicle's Sunday sports section.

Interesting: If UH joined the Big 12, it would be the second-largest university in the conference in terms of enrollment (42K).

These tweets coming after Red McCombs speaks about UH should be added to the Big XII. Ol' Red being a UT big donor, did he whispered some big donations into Bevo's ear should they extend an invitation to the Cougars?? Crazy theory I know.

Fwiw if Cincy gets in we are larger: 44,000

I don't think it was ever completely self-sustaining... I understand from talking with old-timers, that the early Cotton Bowl wins got the athletic department thinking they were able raise ticket prices and even sell seat licenses, and turned off the fans with sticker shock when they saw the prices.

That was the beginning of the sad attendance numbers. I have been told attendance was regularly in the 40K's before the athletic department ran off the fans.

Throughout the 80's, even during the crazy Run-n-Shoot days, we struggled to top 22K in attendance, which looked really awful in the Astrodome.

Before the SWC days, we were independent, and I have no idea how attendance was during those days.

What's wrong with you people. Arkansas Tech has rejected the SEC and B10 on MULTIPLE occasions. There's no way they go to the ACC or B12.

I wonder if this high ranking UT official has spoken to Admiral McRaven and UT BOR. UT is not building a UT campus in Houston to allow UH to compete on the same level/conference with UT

By who? Some lawyer from UH 03-lmfao You are uninformed.

Just like UT will never allow UH to be in a conference with them and just like UT shot down expansion. What UT says goes in the Big 12. That's just reality sorry you are too delusional or young to see that
