Hopin we don't go down this old road again, but it could be argued that he's used a system the first three years that best suits the talent he has and as that talent changes out, it's plausible the system will evolve accordingly. And, with Fields, Green, Kah, Stith 2, Trey, Hyams (sp?) all coming in for the first time, a different type of talent is on hand.

Who is Hyams? Did I miss someone signing?

I assumed it was a typo and he meant Haynes.

Yes, a typo of my memory. I couldn't pull back the guy's name for anything. Apologies.

Let's close the book on this pipe dream. Miracle if they even make it to Norfolk. Maybe if the Pilot did a better job covering ODU hoops year-round, we wouldn't have so much idle speculation/hopes dashed. Alas . . .

I suppose "hope springs eternal", but we have a very poor track record both pre JJ and during JJ's time, of closing on P5 talent. I know everyone says you gotta go for the gold, but after a while it becomes discouraging to always be the also ran.

I think BT learned that lesson and, hence, his recruiting philosophy

We need to win some conference titles and some games in the dance. Then the recruiting will pick up.

Agreed. JJ has been ok so far. The next two years are his time. Team needs to get to the dance.

I still hope we can field a full team. Depth killed us last year.

The age old question seems applicable to that statement ... Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

You can recruit only as strong as the conference you are in. We are not going to get the four or five star recruits. Most of our recruits are going to be two star and an occasional three. At this point I am referring to high school recruits. Where we can get the better players is through transfers. Clearly our best players now are highly rated transfers from higher rated conferences. We have t

Sorry ...not sure what happened there. We have transfers from the ACC,AAC,and the A10. I think our future until we can shed CUSA is in the transfer market. We probably have the best chance this year to put a NCAA tournament team together than we have had in the last several years. As far as signing another top high school point guard this year is not going to happen. Transfer....maybe!

This is certainly logical, but I wonder if there are not any exceptions? Could you argue that a truly dynamic, charismatic coach can transcend his conference? How did Gonzaga get to where it is? or Butler? Or even VCU?

Again, seems logical, but Trey Freeman puts the lie to the premise. Players from higher rated conferences don't normally transfer to lower rated schools because they are GOOD, they transfer because they are not GOOD ENOUGH.

Any time you have a system I n which close to 1,000 players are transferring in a given year, you throw out all of the old traditions of recruiting. Would I love to see us bring in a host of freshmen? Yes? But I'm off a mind that you build your team any way you can, leave all doors open, get 'em when and where you can. I believe that's what we're doing, a decent mix of both

I agree Jumpshooter, and I believe that is a strategy that has worked for not only us, but many mid major programs. I also think the new staff hire will aggressively continue on that path.
