^ that was the jump the shark moment for the ACC IMHO. I think they made a mistake adding the last 6 additions to the conference: BC, Miami, VT, Cuse, Pitt and Louisville are not Tobacco Road/research triangle/southeastern ACC culture type schools. Not a good fit, and it's destroyed old dynamics and rivalries...
Cheers!

It would be very hard to argue with the additions of VT or Louisville. If you wanted to make a case against the others, you might be able to do that (even if you'd be wrong).

RE: The brilliance of Delany
I remember the old days when Delaney coached Notre Dame to a National Championship...those were the days. And then back when Delaney won the Heisman by playing Flex Quarterback...

I don't know what the Big XII will do when he's gone. He'll probably be the next coach for North Carolina Hoops

I think BC, Miami, Pitt and Cuse were all added in hopes of one day landing Notre Dame as a full member.

VT has been good for the ACC. It's more of a culture thing I'm referring to. There was a time before the Big East football conference existed that VT was considered an ECU by the country club. We will see how VT does post Beamer ball. I am very happy that VT and ECU play almost every season and that continues for the next decade at least. I consider it a rivalry game even if you guys don't!

Cheers!

True, VT did not add a new state to the ACC footprint, but let's be honest - there are only 2 ACC teams in Virginia; there are already 4 teams in North Carolina. I think the case against adding ECU is a bit stronger. However, please don't get me wrong - there are teams in the ACC that would welcome ECU as a football playing member... but circumstances basically guarantee that will never happen.

So playing a bunch of ACC teams OOC is probably the best ECU can get at this point.

If culture still matters as much there wouldn't have been the realignment that we've seen in the last six years. It's about positioning for what became the CFP and $ from NCAA basketball points.

Besides, few can afford what the SEC and Big Ten were able to do.

Oh agreed. I've never thought at any moment that ECU would get an ACC invite. I don't consider that a possibility. There was a time however in the 90's when I thought that ECU would get a spot in the Big East. I truly believed that when I saw that former peer Virginia Tech was there. Then historically bad Temple and Rutgers were added. Then a historically weak Cincinnati, peer Louisville and brand new football school USF got the invite and we still weren't invited. The conference even brought UCONN up from Division 1-AA. ((FCS) At one point, Villanova was going to be "UCONN'd" up from FCS to a BCS conference school. I realized two things by watching that: 1. ECU was never going to invited to the country club. 2. The Big East was going to be kicked out of the country club for bringing those schools up who don't belong at the same table with the good ol boys.
Cheers!

BINGO! The Big East made a huge mistake by continuing to focus on basketball-first schools with virtually no football history for far too long. ECU at least has a good sized stadium with a fan base that keeps it full most of the time.

The Big East would still be around today if the Villanova mess hadn't been brought up.

RE: The brilliance of Delany
The (old) Big East would still be around today for many reasons. The first of which is had they not rejected Penn State's bid. PSU in the BE might have kept Miami and Va Tech from leaving because the conference would have had a lot more pull in terms of money and football respect. Secondly, had they truly realized how important football was in the big picture. It was a conference that was doomed to fail eventually.

For Rutgers though, I'm so glad it did. For the schools that got left behind especially Cincy & UConn, its disappointing for them, but eventually they'll get picked up most likely. The American is still a damned good sports conference.
