10 Years Ago in Maui
The 2006 Maui Invitational Pre-Season Tournmanet was, let's say, "interesting" in hindsight. The coaches and programs of these schools certainly changed in a way that I could never have imagined when thinking back on those games.

Georgia Tech, Memphis, and Kentucky. Josh Pastner, Tubby Smith, and John Calipari.

ESPN Article - http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...=263260235
Wiki Article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Maui_...Tournament

Also, unless I stand corrected, I believe this is the only time a Memphis team faced one of Tubby Smith's teams?

I remember watching the Kentucky vs UCLA game...UK put up a good fight...I think they finished that season with 22-23 wins and knocked off Nova in the NCAAs.

Seems I stand corrected - Tubby put a whoopin' on Josh in the 2012-2013 Battle for Atlantis.

Didn't they have Thad Young? I bet he would've played for Tubby...

Only thing that sticks in my memory from that Minnesota game is Joe getting benched and Hollins dropping 41 on us.

That was his freshman year. Beat us, but went 1 and out in both ACC and NCAA tournies.

Your memory is fuzzy. We actually built a HUGE lead in the first half. It looked like men against boys.

Then we came out of the locker room without any energy, just going through the motions. GT capitalized, mounted a furious comeback and stunned us.

That was the only time I ever remember something like that happening to a Calipari team, although the collapse in 2008 had some similarities.

We were up 18 at the half. Remember thinking they must have been heavy into the mai tai in the locker room. Second half was hard to watch.

In the first half after ONE turnover. Tarik had a good tournament down there. Then came back to Memphis and got thrown under the bus after one practice. And this message board has called him a quitter ever since

Are the games from that tournament online anywhere? I would like to go back and re-watch the game against Kentucky. Tried to search Google to no avail.

It was beginning of the change in my fandom too. I was there. Spent a bunch of money taking my family over there. After the loss i saw the players in the hotel... They didnt care! They were already out done with JP. Geron Johnson seemed to be the only one that had any fire (maybe cause he was brand new). Anyway... Somethin changed for me on that trip... I didnt renew my tickets soon after and lost my passion for it... It was a sad event.

I was told Josh got a text from one of the big boys after the Minny game. It said beat Northerm Iowa or find another way back to Memphis

You got that right Bluto, 100%! That was also the beginning of the end for gumdrop. Too bad for us that it took as long as it did to rid ourselves of the program killer.
