I doubt Texas Tech would counter 2 to 3 times. Memphis will pay a bit but they also really seem to want him from what I'm seeing. We'll see. If it goes bust, they should go for Forbes IMO.

Damn right and don't forget it. I damn sure need it when I drive through towns "like Memphis" which I do. Better to be prepared than be another statistic but that's another issue entirely. BTW, I've toned it down and have been rather nice lately so cut me some slack here.

Again, back on topic. I had read that Tubby was gonna sleep on it but it's sounding like he didn't sleep much at all if the report coming out before 5am is true. FWIW, I think that's actually a great hire. He has tons of experience and is a known commodity. Of course has a national title too. I would disagree with the Larry Coker comparison that I have read on other boards. Tubby has also had post season success elsewhere in Minny, and now T Tech. Coker flopped. UK is a very tough job to keep their fans happy. Calipari has even lost a lot of his popularity there. You gotta win titles or get final 4 appearances on the regular to keep the pitchforks away in Lexington. Not fair to judge Tubby there. He's won everywhere he's been. He's a great hire. I like Buzz and Forbes a lot too but Tubby is a solid hire and he really wants the job which means he'll be fired up to coach there. That's a great thing.

The only knock on Tubby has been about recruiting but he could bring in plenty of options to help him there. Texas Tech is not an easy place to be successful in. I'm sure he's had good assistants to help him get talent there. He'll do good at Memphis.

Ok, I actually have some honest non-biased questions for Memphis fans.

Do you think there will be more pressure applied to Tubby to win and go to the NCCA tourney right out the gate than there was at Texas Tech? If so, do you think it's fair to a 1st year coach?

What are your realistic expectations from Tubby's first year knowing the talent he will inherit?

Do you feel that there's enough there for him to be successful getting to postseason where Pastner couldn't be in the last 2 years?

Do you feel Tubby is an upgrade? Strengths vs. Pastner's weaknesses?

the "sleep on it" thing was a classy guy wanting to tell his AD and players face to face...not over an ESPN ticker...I can respect that.

Tubby is known as one of the best Xs and Os guys in basketball (Pastner was not)...and lets just say at an inner city school like Memphis...the kids here will be able to relate better to him than Josh.

hire Penny as Asst Coach/lead recruiter...keep Lawson on staff...and lets get rolling.

we kept Cal 9 years, and Pastner 7 years...Tubby will get a fair shot here, and probably retire at Memphis.

Great idea about Penny! This way he can work with his school and learn from a seasoned coach like Capel is doing under Coach K at Duke. Then you got a great replacement option if or when the time comes. Penny would rock recruiting. You'd have a NBA great come into a families living room. Sold.

I'm not a Memphis fan but that would be pretty cool. That would be like us having Kelly Holcomb be our QB coach which I would mind at all.

So why is Tubby leaving for Memphis? Is it an upgrade ?

A lot of folks are saying Texas Tech is a tough job because of the boosters and athletic dept. plus the conference they are in. Hard to get a top player to go down to nowhere Texas to play. It's a good win for Memphis. Arrrrrhgh. :-)

I don't really like that response. Bob Knight took TTU to the NCAAs 4 of 6 years and to the Sweet 16... Personality issues aside, clearly it is possible to do big things there...

Money. GT was still paying Paul Hewitt, and now will be paying Brian Gregory too. Memphis was apparently willing to kick in...pay GT...to take Pastner. These are crazy times we live in.

This seems like a nit, but there is a distinction. Memphis isn't paying GT anything, but is paying Pastner $1.2 million next year only. Josh leaving was like a gift from above, Memphis was on the hook for $10.6 million if the firing had taken place.

Good hire. Cant imagine CUSA's top teams being able to woo away a B12 name coach. Then again, Memphis, UConn and Cincy aren't really your normal G5 basketball schools. I could definitely see UConn being able to swing a hire like that too.
