64 isn't old.

The fact that there are such a small number of successful D1 head coaches over the age of 65 should be more alarming as a testimony that college basketball coaching is a young man’s game. There are 4 or 5 coaches that are still having a tremendous amount of success, but that’s a small percentage of the 300+ D1 men’s basketball programs out there.

When the coaches get older I don’t believe they lose a step in the area of X’s and O’s, I feel like they lose their energy and zest for recruiting and interest in dealing with the shady world of AAU basketball.

Damn, did we block all the Tech fans last go round? This could have been fun trolling them.

As someone from the University of Memphis just reminded me, the average age of this year's Final Four coaches was 64. Same as Tubby.

Seems like they are angry. Stunned a lowly program like Memphis could steal their coach. What a joke.

I wonder if Memphis will get the Tulsa / early Kentucky Tubby or the Minnesota / Late Kentucky Tubby?

yeah, it's not like Tubby has taken 3 different programs to Sweet 16s...oh wait...yes he has...

I honestly think this is a great hire. If he had the level of talent Pastner had the last few years I can assure you he would have done a lot better than the results achieved. He is a very good coach and will also be a great ambassador for the school. You can do a lot worse than Tubby Smith that is for sure.

I don’t disagree with anything you said and personally I think that counts for a lot. I actually think he’s a very good hire.

However the exact person you just described coaches in the AAC for Temple. He’s won back to back AAC coach of the year honors and even though the Owls have made the NCAA tournament 7 times in his 10 years, including 6 years in a row, besides his record against top 25 and top 10 teams there are many, many fans who want him out. Not because of X’s and O’s as much as his lack recruiting fire and landing the top prospects. I am as big a Fran Dunphy supporter as just about anyone out there and I must admit my patience is wearing very thin very quickly.

I see the Memphis fans demanding success the same way the Temple fans do, my only concern with the Tubby Smith hire would be does he have the fire left to put in the hours and play the games necessary to recruit the kind of player that will take you over the hump from regular season success and making the NCAA tournament, to actually making some noise in the tournament.

I think this is where getting a top notch recruiter on the staff makes a world of difference.
I would say that selling Memphis basketball versus Minnesota basketball is a big step in the right direction.

I had thought that Tubby was maybe an average coach but look at what Minnesota has become since he left. Total dumpster. Tech was also a dumpster beforehand.

Sounds like a good hire.

He's a pretty good floor coach. If he can recruit Memphis well or hire a local recruiter I think he'll do fine.

The Memphis board is up in arms with a resounding NO.

A resounding no? Did you look at this poll? "Good hire" is leading and that + "home run" have 42% of the vote. Wait and see has 21%.

That is 63% good or wait and see. "Could have done better" has 21%.

Horrible or worse got 16%.

Doesn't seem like anything close to a resounding no.

I don't think its alarming at all..just the pool of young coaches is so much greater...as there are some very good (and now some very bad) young coaches out there.....as there are just not that very many old coaches out there (many have already made tens of millions of $$$ so no need to work yourself to death).

Bottom line...age is just a number on how long its been since you've been born....doesn't mean much else.

Tubby Smith told @CBSSports he has not yet accepted the Memphis job. Two sides have yet to reach an official agreement.

Yeah, translation: TTU upped their offer to Tubby by a million, to $2.8M a year. We might want to toss him back at that price, lol.

"One and Dunph's" career tourney record of 3-16 (2-7 at Temple) is the biggest issue for Temple fans along with his subpar recruiting. There is no comparison is career achievements between him and Tubby Smith other than being close in age.

And putting in the hours, having energy to recruit, etc. is not Dunphy's problem. His ability to close high level recruits is the issue. It has been since the day he started at Temple.

Yup. I would tell him "Here is our offer. If you don't want it, fine. I understand. Enjoy Lubbock."

I would like him as our head coach. I would like some other people too....Eric Musselman, Steve Forbes, etc.

I'm not gonna get bent out of shape about not getting him even though I think he would do a good job here. A lot of people would do a good job here.

In the last 50 years only two people have not won at Memphis and that was Moe Iba.....in the late 60s....and Tic Price who was getting it turned around before he started banging students. Everyone else has won here....Gene Bartow(HoFer and Final Four), Wayne Yates(20 win seasons and Tourneys), Dana Kirk(final four), Larry Finch(legend), John Calipari(HoFer and final four), and even Josh Pastner(4 NCAAs).

Bottom line...if you get anyone competent and you will win here.

Agree. And at this point, there are maybe 20-30 available candidates who are all about the same. Any of them would beat Pastner.

oh lord yes. If you had told me last Wednesday that Pastner would be gone without paying the 10 million and Tubby Smith(if that happens) would be our coach I wouldve had been outrageously excited.
