Massive Oil Bribery Scandal
Why has the Mainstream media been quiet on this? The FBI, DOJ, and the governments of Australia, UK, and Monaco are investigating. Not a single peep from CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and the BBC. Is Walmart cutting the price of the iPhone really a bigger deal than this?
Quote:Samsung, Hyundai and Rolls-Royce are among the companies that have been implicated in a major global oil industry scandal. The revelation surrounds a mysterious Monaco-based company called Unaoil which is accused of bribing government officials to secure technology business deals in the energy industry for international corporations. An estimated $1tn (£700bn) in bribes was paid out to corrupt officials in total.
According to tens of thousands of internal Unaoil emails and documents seen by the Huffington Post and Fairfax Media, South Korean firms Samsung and Hyundai; British firm Rolls-Royce; US companies Honeywell, Halliburton, KBR and FMC Technologies; Germany-based Man Turbo; and hundreds of other major international brands relied on Unaoil to secure lucrative contracts with a multitude of countries in the Middle East, Africa and the former Soviet Union.

RE: Massive Oil Bribery Scandal
We need to ditch the FCPA and just allow us to use money to operate in the developing world.
Believe it or not the Chinese, and even a lot of Europeans, have no problem doing it.
FCPA does nothing but tie one hand behind our back.
I wouldn't even call this a scandal. So what?

I was working for Price Waterhouse in 1977 when the FCPA went into effect and our clients who did business overseas were going nuts. In those days, bribing officials in countries like Italy, was a generally accepted practice. It's not surprising that to do any business in the third world today, bribery is necessary.
A couple of days ago there was a thread on our negative trade balance. I dare say that the FCPA has been a big block for US companies trying to do export business.
But bribery seems so harsh. I prefer Market Development Expenses.

Why should I be concerned with this?
Once the new President gets in, he'll fix all this!

Yep, for most of the world bribery is just another cost of doing business.

RE: Massive Oil Bribery Scandal
I'm interested in this story. Thanks for posting it. I haven't seen it until you posted it. From the WSJ - just a snippet.
Quote:Australia probes companies over bribery. The Australian Federal Police said it is investigating several Australian companies over bribery in light of allegations of foreign bribery by Monaco-based firm Unaoil, The Guardian reports. Those allegations were aired in stories earlier this week by Fairfax Media and the Huffington Post. Unaoil has denied the allegations.

It's modern day imperialism. We demand everybody abide by our view of what is ethical or not.
It's little surprise that when I travel to meetings across Africa the Chinese guy that walks in after I do with a bag full of cash gets the deal.

It must feel so good to sit there and pretend to hold the moral high ground but in truth the only ground you've successfully seized is that of the woefully ignorant.
