Social Media Question
I've noticed a couple of posters on here have mentioned that they have been involved in hiring and social media was mentioned. That reminded me of something that has been on my mind lately. Has having something like Facebook or Twitter gotten so prevalent that not having it could be considered a negative to an employer?

I don't really care about social media and I quit Facebook a long time ago and haven't really missed any of it. For the record, I'm not some anti tech guy living in a shack cursing the modern world. I just have always found most of it to be a waste of time. Additionally, I had no trouble finding a job after college and I haven't had any trouble landing internships since I went back to law school.

So, for those with experience, am I going to be looked at as an unemployable weirdo for not participating?

I should add that I have seriously considered making a go of it on my own or possibly forming a partnership and I realize that social media advertising is pretty much a must nowadays, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

RE: Social Media Question
My daughter is out job seeking. She was told that to not have a Facebook account could send a msg to an HR person that they have something to hide. She was instructed to have a generic page that shows nothing that could be seen as negative..including politics. She was also told to not have a Twitter account. Some employers think that if you have a Twitter account, you will use it constantly while at work. Id say the same thing could happen with Facebook...but..evidently Twitter is worse. I would not know.

I do a lot of hiring..but..my targets usually do not have a Facebook account because of economics. Most of them are not affluent enough to have computers or smartphones.

RE: Social Media Question
I'm involved with Social Media as a professional communicator.

I don't think it would be as important to be on Facebook as it would be to have a presence on LinkedIn if you are job seeking. Any current job seeker should absolutely be on LinkedIn. Prosepctive employers look for LinkedIn profiles when they are first reviewing resumes and second interviewing candidates.

I will also add that if you are over 40 and you are job seeking, you could be sending a message to an employer that you are a dinosaur and afraid of new technology if you aren't on SM at least on LinkedIn.

If you are going to be on facebook, control your privacy settings, keep it clean and non-political.

Thanks for the response. I meant to include in the OP that I do have a LinkedIn account with an up to date profile pic and and career highlights on it, but I don't really use it for anything. It has gotten decidedly mixed reviews from everyone I now that uses it.

RE: Social Media Question
I wouldn't personally consider it a negative as I know plenty of people who had social media but dropped it for one reason or another.

Likewise I wouldn't hold it against someone who had their accounts private. My own account is private not because I have anything to hide, but because it's simply the smart thing to do.

I totally get passing on a guy that doesn't pass the social media test, but would you look with suspicion at the lack of it when considering a candidate?

I wouldn't. I would probably consider it a positive.

RE: Social Media Question
You'd be shocked at what some of these kids come in with on their Twitter or Facebook.

Yes, holding $20s and a bottle of Aristocrat with a hat on sideways with a shirt on that says "yes ***** I love bush" simply can't be overcome. That's a real event by the way and is far from the worst.

I don't blame her. I did it on my own as well. It's a needless time waster and, frankly, I just don't care about hearing about the minutia of another person's life, close up shots of food, and semi-coherent political ramblings by people who are constantly "outraged."

I think the logic behind it is stupid. I mean, does having a Facebook page set to Private mean the same thing? It's beyond stupid.

Depends on the industry I think. I work in digital marking, so if you don't have a social media presence, that's not really going to help your chances in getting a job with my company.

Lot's of young people don't really use Facebook or Twitter anymore. They're using KIK, Tumblr, Snapchat, and others now. Since adults have become more prevalent on social media, tweens and teens have moved to more private social media platforms so they can do their thing without their parents / family members knowing.
