the QB battles:
-Usf: keep the bad passing qb who you won with or switch to more polished former transfer
-ucf: holman a conf champ and a 0-12 qb...new coach does he keep his job
-ecu: benkurt (the hurt former heir apparent) or summers (the mobile subpar passing with experience)
-cincy: gunner crowned the starter by tubbs but how solid is his job
-tulane: starter transferred, new coach, completely up in the air
-memphis: the returning backup vs the JC vs a true fresh
-navy: tago vs the field

No QB battle at Navy.
Tago is #1. Will Worth (also a senior) is #2.Both are wearing non-contact jerseys this spring. Their classmate Troy Thompson called it on his playing career, and is a student assistant this year, leaving a handful of rising sophmores/juniors to get spring full contact in the fight for #3 this year and pole position for '17 starting QB spot. A couple will stay QBs for scout team/JV and another couple will shift positions - slotback, receiver, or D-back.

Spring concerns in order will be:
2 of 3 D Line,
O Line ("5 starters lost" a bit overstated as they were only starting together at the end of the season - lots of experience including starts returning),
Fullback - confidence in last year's #3, as well as the pipeline,
Secondary, shuffling for the best mix, but also some key gaps
Linebacker, shuffling to find the best mix,
Receiver, Tillman returns, need a couple more
Slotback, always a re-load situation - discriminator to move guys up the depth chart probably blocking

Got some practices in, on Spring Break now, will resume after. Couple interviews with coaches and captains and Tago already out there.

No Spring Game.

im sure ecu fans have made up "their" mind who they think it will be but summers will definitely be in the competition

Being that the coaches have all but said he isn't I'll take their word over yours nothing personal. I think Summers gets some snaps in very limited packages and then plays TE/H back/all over the place the rest of the time, which is what our TE coach said on the subject past week.

they didn't say that ...the only quotes the coaches have said is that he will be on the field in some capacity...and it was more of insinuating that if he doesn't win the job that he wont be holding a clipboard on the sideline

scottie just last week said he is not closing the door on anything ..even using 2 qbs like last year, if he feels that is the best chance to win...but he would rather have 1 guy

Why is it that you think you know more about what will happen with ECU football than ECU fans? I've listened to a lot of stuff and I'd be surprised if Summers was even being considered at QB. All signs point to a battle between Benkert and Nelson. As for Summers, it appears he'll either be receiving catches and/or getting the ball handed to him.

Who will get the nod at QB?

Kurt Benkert (JR)
6’3” 225lbs
Missed 2015 due to an ACL tear shortly after being named the starter. Was Shane Carden’s backup, and ECU fans are very high on Benkert’s potential.
[Image: http%3A%2F%2Fci-platform.silverchalice.c...39f7260a20]

Philip Nelson (SR)
6’2” 222lbs
Former starting QB for Minnesota. Transferred to Rutgers after assault charges in MN. Transferred to ECU last year and sat out a year. Many Pirate fans are optimistic that this kid has turned the corner, and with Big Ten starting QB experience, he could really give Benkert a run for the starting job this season.

You have no F'n clue what you talking about. Go back to enjoying your bowl win and stellar recruiting class. 07-coffee3

For whomever has a hard-on thinking Summers will get a shot at quarterback..this was off the practice notes from the first day. Doesn't mean we won't see special packages for him, but he has no business being a QB this year with the other guys on the roster.

I think we'll be just fine with either Benkert or Nelson at QB. Competition will be good for them. They've got an excellent stable of WR's to work with, which helps any QB. I have a feeling that the ECU offense will be back to being a Top 10 offense within a couple years, once Coach Mo gets settled in.

Flowers is not a bad passing QB. He put up major numbers last year. 22 Passing TD's to only 8 Ints. You don't pass for 22 TD's and have 34 total TD's by being a bad QB. 3.400 total yards. 34 total TD's rushing/passing. It will be almost impossible for anyone to beat that out. In fact, if you look at stats, he had a fairly similar year to Greg Ward. Flowers had more TD passes, 22 to 17. Ward had 100 more yards rushing, 1100 to 1000. Both had a low amount of INT's 8 for Flowers, 6 for Ward. Ward had a higher completion percentage, 67% to 60%, but all in all, they are generally in the same category statistics wise.

According to this podcast, a starter will be named when one emerges, not necessarily after spring.

Commercial Appeal@memphisnews
Tiger Football #Podcast: @Coach_Norvell talks spring practice and more with @Tom_Schad. http://memne.ws/1Z5PBzY

Other notes of interest...looks to run more four down fronts with attack positions on defense and more two back sets on offense.

More of the same from yesterday's practice report:

"Montgomery also noted the play of Trevon Brown (two TD catches) who spearheaded an impressive afternoon for ECU's receiving corps that included strong performances by Quay Johnson and James Summers ... Philip Nelson and Kurt Benkert continue to take the bulk of the snaps at quarterback ..."

Also, Cal RB Jeffrey Coprich is transferring to ECU this summer. Must be a good student as he's already graduated and will be immediately eligible with 2 years to play.
