Vegas 8 Tournament
When are they going to announce this field??
I see that several schools are already talking about bids/possible bids for this tourney.
Ones mentioned:
Boise State
Illinois State
Oakland U.
NC State
Kansas State

NC State has declined. Sounds like it will only be the Vegas 8 when it is announced today.

How can there be any teams left for Vegas (that really want to travel cross country to play one more meaningless game)?

1 - you get more practices
2 - Vegas will be 50K, total, for the team (cheeper than going a few rounds in the CIT / CBI)

It's not one more. It's the potential for four. I actually think this tournament format sounds pretty cool. They said they want to treat it like a bowl outing. Fans travel to one fun location.

I read an article this morning that said they have turned down the CBI and CIT but are interested in the Vegas 16.

They came out this morning with a statement declining all bids.

Looks like NIU is the only MAC school.

RE: Vegas 8 Tournament
Actually at 8 it's an entertaining format and as this tourney gains traction they will get fans traveling to the desert. An 8 team field you can complete in just 3 days which means with a Saturday/Sunday/Monday nite championship you only have to take off 1 day of work.
CBI/CIT are going to be up against it as travel costs are going to be harder to justify playing in a tournament with little prestige.
Vegas is going to be attractive to NIT bid teams who land in the #5 to #8 seed range as their chances of hosting an NIT game are very slim. The #1 and #2 seeded teams host most of the games, every once in a while a 3rd seed will host a 2nd game but that's almost impossible for a 4th seed.
If my program is a 5th seed or higher NIT team, I'd take a Vegas bid for sure.

This year it is Mon thru Wed.
And I agree - a 3-4 day tourny in Vegas, with a couple week notice, is completely doable. Plus, teams actually get time to practice. In the CBI, CIT, NIT, you get maybe a few days off in between games, and that's if you win. So you don't really get much extra practice time. With Vegas, you get a full 2 weeks, even if you lost the first game.

It should be obvious. The high majors all boycotted all tourneys other than the NCAA and NIT. Are they trying to kill the others?

They've been boycotting those tournaments for years. They aren't doing it because they are trying to kill those tournaments. They do it because they view these pay to play tournaments as being beneath them.

Also ... most of the remaining power conference teams not in NCAA-NIT ... are also just bad teams ... barely .500. Witness OSU, a barely good enough team in the NIT, any Big Ten team worse than that is probably making a coaching change.

Thank you and good catch regarding the days of play. Good change for them, playing over Easter weekend would have held down attendance. I'll bet next year and future years they do start play on a Saturday and if they keep it to 8 teams they'll have their title game Monday nite so those that travel only need 1 day off from work. As you mentioned the benefits of the NIT, CBI & CIT are limited and costs are about that of the Vegas tourney; several Power Conference teams who won their opening round NIT games are traveling long distances to 2nd round games
FSU traveled to Valpo, IN and lost; which is about 1500 miles for them and only 48 hours between 1st and 2nd round game start times.
VTech gets to go to Provo for BYU
OSU travels to Gainsville for the Gators
Georgia gets to fly to LA to face St Mary's
Alabama flew to Omaha to get pounded by Creighton in 1st round
Wagner who upset St Bonaventure gets to fly to Omaha for Creighton, big reward for them. Vegas is a better option for any NIT team seeded lower than 4th and even for 3rd and 4th seeds who likely only play 1 home game and have to travel to 2 road games if they win. Vegas tourney has a bright future.

Northwestern who won 20 regular season games for the first time in program history did not receive an NIT bid. Turned down Vegas because practice week is during finals week.

That Ohio State team which was about the 7th or 8th best in The Big Ten beat the best MAC team without two starters. Just saying
