“This lapse in judgment is completely ASUCD’s fault and responsibility alone"
criticism for sumo wrestling costumes
Quote:Among those activities was an attraction in which students could dress in sumo suits and wrestle each other. The activity immediately drew criticism from members of the student body, who accused ASUCD of fat shaming and culturally appropriating Japanese culture.
All this is making me so confused. Exactly how are we supposed to behave? If cultural appropriation is wrong, then at what point in time are people supposed to act like just their own culture? Can a black person in America today play basketball or is that appropriation of white culture because James Naismith was white? Is a white person allowed to eat a tomato or is just for pre-Columbian aborigines of North America?

Reminds me of an Internet quote, "Africa is for African; Asia is for Asians; and Europe is for everyone."

St. Patricks Day is right around the corner, celebrated globally, Irish don't complain. Think about that, a tiny Island raided butchered and their people sold into slavery by England. For the most part it is a drinking holiday. Do the Irish whine botch and moan, nope.

The Irish don't complain about being associated in a most derogatory manner with fighting either, ahem Notre Dame.
For the life of me, I don't know how it is ok to offend the people of Ireland by stereotyping them all as "Fighting" but it's not acceptable with other groups...
Must be all of that white privilege that the Irish benefited from that makes it ok. You know mass starvation, disease, repression, discrimination... normal high brow, privileged stuff.
