So I just voted in the Texas primary...
First of all, bigger lines than normal for an early voting session.

Okay, I knew this was an open primary and I was able to vote for Democrats or Republicans without declaring in advance my party affiliation. But for some reason, I thought I would see a ballot of all the candidates in both parties and could vote how I wanted up and down the tickets.

But no, they asked you if you are a democrat or republican before voting and that's the ballot you're voting on. And that bums me out because I definitely would have considered voting for certain Republicans in certain races; but since I had to make a party choice, I chose Democrats.

Is this how the other states are working too? It does seem harder to figure that some races are being sabotaged by other parties' voters if you're choosing the party before you vote. It would be easier to vote for Trump if you're a Hillary supporter for example, if you were still able to vote for other Democratic candidates besides the presidential vote.

RE: So I just voted in the Texas primary...
When you are voting in a primary, you are participating in a party process, not a state or federal election process. So its one or the other.

The reason reps & dems schedule most primaries on the same day in the state is to save money, as they can split the costs of a lot of things. But it really is two separate processes going on, even though they are normally held side by side, and you have to choose one to participate in. (In some states you have to choose well in advance)

In my precinct, you get a dem or republican card, take it to the voting machine and insert it, and it loads the appropriate ballot.

Both states I've voted in, Michigan and Ohio, work that way. You get one or the other.

I am a firm believer in non-partisan "jungle primaries" of the type used in California and Louisiana. I really hope that will catch on in other places.

Virginia has no party registration, but like texas you have to choose what ballot you want.

The general election is not considered a party primary and includes the nominees for all parties for all races you are eligible to vote for.

maybe it was the fact that you did early voting. I just looked up my voting locations for my precinct and it has one for democrats and one for republicans. I will have to give you more info once I go on Tuesday to vote.

There are a lot of young kids on this board, this may be their first time voting.

RE: So I just voted in the Texas primary...
I voted today, for Hillary. First time ever to vote in a democrat primary. It means I punted local elections, because democrats don't even bother to field candidates here in Montgomery County. But all the republican candidates are social conservatives trying to out-Jesus each other, so that's not really a big deal. And I think stopping Bernie is far more important than the difference between any of the other candidates. Is Donald Trump really more conservative than Hillary? How do you know?

I did get to vote no on several referendums for really awful ideas; I'm sure they'll all pass, this was the democrat primary, but at least I voted no.

Cool. Regardless of who someone votes for I believe people should vote. I do not know your age, but I turned 18 about a week after the 1974 elections. Been an avid voter ever since (although my parents were politically active and avid voters).

I agree that some elections excite me more than others.

I've never been less excited. The country is headed off the cliff, and the only significant difference in this field is whether we crash sooner (Bernie) or later (the rest). Nobody has any good ideas that I can see.

I will be somewhat more excited to vote for the libertarian in November. Voting for someone who has no chance excites me more than voting for any of these losers.

and there are some that believe you can vote in multiple states for the general election. Tom is one of those who I feel could easily believe that is true and not a problem.

It is hard to drag my butt down to the community center to vote, when there is nothing to vote for, only things to vote against.

it's a drag (both figuratively and literally).....all I see is comedic value as this plays out.....yep, it's the one time I don't find things funny....yet, I still have to laugh....

Took me 3-1/2 minutes from the time I got out of my car until I got back to the car. If that saves us from Bernie, there's nothing better that I could have done with that 3-1/2 minutes.
