UTSA: Hickey eyes plan for 2,500-seat, campus baseball facility
Slowly but surely, we are trying to upgrade our facilities...
Quote:SAN ANTONIO — UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey has asked an architect for a preliminary “schematic” design and cost estimate for a refurbished baseball facility at Roadrunner Field.
Hickey said she wants to see whether it’s feasible to build a 2,500-seat stadium around the team’s current home field.

should start with that atrocity you call a basketball arena first, then focus on sports that don't make money.

I would like to bet that our baseball program actually makes money compared to our basketball program.

You averaged 397 fans at home games last year.
Baseball has more scholarships and travels more than basketball. 0% chance it made money.

Nice for you guys. Should update the basketball arena first though. My high school had a nicer one.
And that's not trying to be mean. I wish we had the baseball success you all have. But basketball arena would be a higher priority IMO.

Don't waste it on a baseball field, throw it into a basketball arena. You need it.

I often hear some of the venues in C-USA referred to as "high school gyms".. I went to a high school with a larger endowment than a couple of the schools in C-USA and our gym was nowhere near as nice as Tudor (a high school gym according to some). Can I get some photos of these high school palaces? If they truly are as nice as some claim, I question the school's priorities..

Wow!!!! That is even better!!!
I mean no disrespect at all. I mean, if we had someone with an unusual name, I'd say the exact same thing.

I first read it as a new 2500 seat BASKETBALL facility and said "FINALLY. They really need a new one of those. Makes the conference look terrible". Re-read the title and came away very disappointed.

Here's the gym of the high school I graduated from. It's in the middle of BFE Kentucky, a public school with no private funding.
It only shows one side of the gym, but the other is identical.
I would say it's equal in quality to UTSA's.

RE: UTSA: Hickey eyes plan for 2,500-seat, campus baseball facility
Frankly I don't care what our Basketball arena (gym) looks like. It's the product that gets put on the floor that I care more about. Our team stinks, and changes need to be made so we are competitive. Until then, I don't really care if everyone thinks it looks like a high school gym. Does it need to be updated/replaced? Yes. Do I want a beautiful shinning example of what a college basketball arena should look like and still lose? No.
Is UTSA Baseball competitive? Yes. Do I think if the funds are available for a team that is competitive and requires an updated facility to keep/retain players/coaches to stay competitive, we should spend them? YES! Our Baseball field is an embarrassment and frankly our team deserves more. They're making fricken bricks with no straw (old school Charlton Heston reference), they've earned it in my book.
Basketball is going to be a work in progress because we're going to need to clean house and build from the ground up. Get competitive, and then build the facility. Our basketball team also has to compete with what I would consider a competitive professional basketball team (yes, sarcasm) right up the street. Would the other CUSA team with the NBA franchise with anywhere near the amount of banners and success nearby please stand up? I didn't think so. It's a big money sport, and I understand the need, but we need to fix the team first, bring in the crowds and then worry about a facility.
Strictly my opinion and probably soon to be told what an idiot I am.

Unless you land a really special coach, it will be difficult to be competitive in a bad basketball facility. I see recruits reference facilities all the time in basketball recruiting articles.
It's certainly not impossible to win in the current facility, but it is improbable.
Clearly facilities aren't the only thing that matters. Charlotte has one of the nicest arenas in CUSA and we haven't been good the 3 years we have been here. Our current coach has referenced having nice facilities as a reason he took the job though, so they also help recruit coaches, not just players.

Yep our football coaches all the time rave about facilities and how everyone is surprised how nice we have it.....In fact Petrino when here said our facilities are better then some in the SEC.....Really helps with recruiting in football...
I thought article said basketball too, well at least we know UTSA priorities....

I don't think you're going to get good basketball players until you upgrade the facility.

You can start right near Houston with the Cy-Fair ISD Berry Center:
And throw in the Katy ISD Merrell Center, where the Southland Conference Tournament has been held in recent years:
