Minnesota Elementary School Bans Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas
Claims It “Threatens Our Culture Of Tolerance”…

Quote:The Baby Jesus, Tom Turkey and Cupid are about to be given the heave-ho at a Minnesota elementary school to be more inclusive of their ethnically diverse student population.

Bruce Vento Elementary School, in St. Paul, has decided to stop celebrating Valentine’s Day along with other “dominant holidays” including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“My personal feeling is we need to find a way to honor and engage in holidays that are inclusive of our student population,” Principal Scott Masini wrote in a letter to parents.

The Star-Tribune reports the letter was surfaced on a private Facebook page titled, “Supporting St. Paul Students and Teachers.”

“I have come to the difficult decision to discontinue the celebration of the dominant holidays until we can come to a better understanding of how the dominant view will suppress someone else’s view,” the principal noted.

The Star-Tribune reports Masini made the decision to can the holidays in consultation with his staff.

“One of the concerns that I have,” he wrote, “…is whether or not this practice is encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening the culture of tolerance and respect for all.”

Alright, fine, if you want to be careful about Christmas in a school that is majority Asian like this one, go ahead.

But if anyone's offended by Thanksgiving turkey or Valentine's Day candy, tuff sheet. You live here now, deal with it.

If I were an expat in a foreign country, none of their local holidays would "offend" me. It's part of their historical identity and culture. I don't need anything watered down for me lest I feel 'suppressed.' 07-coffee3

These folks are so concerned about offending newcomers they don't give a crap about offending folks already there.

^ Indeed, German/Scandinavian politicians know a lot about that lately.

My family is moving to Germany soon. We will accordingly adapt and conform to their culture without complaint or concern. Because it's their country.

Somehow the definition of tolerance has gotten messed up. Tolerance means respect for all cultures, not just minority cultures.

How exactly do you ban Thanksgiving and Xmas if kids aren't even in school at that time?

I'm assuming they mean decorations, food, and such.

That pretty much has already taken place mostly because of standardized testing and not because of a War on Christmas.

When I started teaching, we had Christmas and Thanksgiving days where we actually spent the entire day eating and watching movies.

More recently however, we were instructed not to give students a free day but keep teaching even on the last day.

Yes indeedy. And I've lived there before and loved it, so I jumped at the chance.

If you plan to have any children there, be prepared to eat your wife's afterbirth. I heard that's customary there.

I will, but only if I can bring with me my inclination to grope women in bath houses.

Oh, and more people in the States do that than you think.
